I had used the salad bowl for dinner. Nothing was heated in it, After dinner it was washed by hand in warm soapy water in the sink. It was dried and placed on the kitchen counter . About an hour later we heard a loud explosion . The bowl had exploded into many pieces. The pieces covered a large area of space but did not hit any of us in the living room. I keep the pieces and turned them into the management of the resort so that they could see what had occurred. I had them send people to clean up the mess I had not been able to do with just a broom.
I opened the package of IKEA cups and proceeded to wash the cups. As I reached down into one of the cups with sponge in hand, I felt something going into my finger under my fingernail. When I looked into the cup, I noticed at the bottom, on the side, a defect, which was similar to a bird swing defect according to this site (http://www.ams.usda.gov/AMSv1.0/getfile?dDocName=STELDEV3003498). It seems that in a regular bird swing defect, the top end is connected, but in my cup, the top, sharp end was pointing straight up. It became lodged under my fingernail and I had to have it removed by a surgeon (while my finger was anesthetized, my fingernail was lifted to remove the spike). It is conceivable that, had I not discovered the defect through the handwashing, the glass cup could have been put to use, and if something was placed inside the cup (e.g., ice, spoon, etc.), the glass defect could have dislodged from the cup, and someone could have drunk from the cup and swallowed the spike.
We have very hard water, so I began using [REDACTED] in our dishwasher. We also have Corelle dinnerware. After several months of using [REDACTED] as an additive with our dishwasher detergent packets, we noticed that the previously smooth rims on the Corelle felt rough. I suspect that the Corelle is being dissolved by the [REDACTED]. Now small fragments of the Corelle edges flake off when touched. No injuries have occurred, but they would certainly be possible considering the flaking glass-like edges. Over time, [REDACTED] has removed some of the printed logos, etc, from our glassware, so perhaps I shouldn't have been surprised. However, there are no warning labels on the [REDACTED] and nothing in the Corelle product information or warranty information that suggests that products like Lemi-Shine should not be used. I contacted Corelle via their website to report what has happened and to ask if this was a known issue. The only response I got was an offer of a discount if I want to buy another set of Corelle. I suspect that our Corelle is now more prone to breakage, since the integrity of the edge has been compromised. I'm also concerned that someone will get a glass fragment from handling the dinnerware. We've used Corelle for decades and nothing like this has happened before. In my opinion, both the Corelle and the [REDACTED] should have some kind of warning label. [REDACTED] has no directions as to quantity to use, so it is possible that using less would avoid this problem. I am concerned that this is happening to other people who may not realize what is going on and how dangerous it could be.
We have a set of Anchor Hocking Coffee glasses with handles that we've used for the past couple of years without incident. Tonight, after I poured boiling water into the glass mugs which had tea bags in them, one of the glasses violently exploded. I was not wearing shoes at the time and our kitchen floor is slate, so I instinctively jumped back more than a yard to avoid injury. The shards of glass were large and jagged. They flew several feet across the room. I stood frozen and called for my husband to help me. Fortunately I was wearing glasses and was not injured. This was a very traumatic experience for me. What if this had happened to a child or an elderly person? This glass did not break, IT EXPLODED!
I decided to test my dinner dishes for lead in the glaze and bought a test kit from the hardware store. The dishes tested strongly positive. I bought a different kit and retested - still positive. The dishes are made by the Lynn Chase Foundation and are an active pattern manufactured abroad, but I do not know where. They are sold by Neiman-Marcus, Scully and Scully and perhaps other high-end retailers. The design name is Jaguar Jungle. The dishes are very beautiful and are expensive. I notified both retailers and the Lynn Chase Foundation. I got a response from Scully and Scully telling me that Lynn Chase had informed them that their dishes were all tested before importation and were safe. None of them actually responded to my issue and essentially ignored my concerns. Based on the positivity of my tests at home, I do not feel these dishes are safe and would like you to know about this. I understand colorful glazes often have lead, but I think the public should be warned when the glaze is on a dish someone will eat from. Do you have an opinion re this? Am I being over-concerned? I did also test some old dishes I have from the 1960s (American) and they were also positive. Dishes I have from Italy and Tunisia (not vintage) were negative. One from France (vintage) was positive. Other American ones are also positive, but vintage (Bauer and Fiesta).
An Olde Thompson pepper mill with plastic pasts, the plastic spinner inside broke, and the parts came out thru the grinder. I bit down on plastic chunks 3 different times, before seeing where the plastic was coming from. The third time, it landed in my cottage cheese and I was able to see the chuck of plastic! This defective design already caused almost $2500 in dental work, emergency room visits, and will cost another $950 for another extraction, and $15,450+ for 3 dental implants. 1. First incident May 2016: I made a Greek salad and bit down HARD on something. The impact of whatever I bit down on, severely injured the top #3 molar and bottom right side molar #31. (It hurt very badly but no X-rays showed any fractures..) Weeks later, June 2016 ended in ER with a serious abscess near #31 (lower molar) Went to Endodontist, who discovered, the bottom molar #31 cracked all of the way thru from tooth to the root tip and tooth had to be extracted. ($550) (An implant at a later date, will be $5150.00) 2. Second Incident August 2016: I again bit down on something hard and plastic..the damage wouldn't show uo for a year A year later in Sept 2017 ..delayed damage from the impact in August 2016 and part of tooth #18 broke off. Tooth #18 was also cracked all the way down to the root. This tooth also had to be extracted ($550) (I will need an implant at a later date, and it will be $5150.00) 3. Third Incident: Sept 2016: When I was cracking black pepper onto cottage cheese, I saw a big chunk of plastic! I saw how the inside of the mill was plastic and had broken apart. The pieces of broken plastic were small enough to go thru the grinder when I had it opened up all the way to produce LARGER pieces of black pepper corns. Then, immediately I knew what happened the two previous times! 4. Fourth Incident January 2020: I awoke on New Years day with a severe abscess on tooth #3 This was the tooth that was severely inju
I was scrubbing the plate with normal pressure under running water in the sink when the bottom suddenly broke out in an almost perfect circle. It cut a piece on the top of my thumb when it broke, cut could have cut worse if my hand was under it when it broke. The aftermath was two round pieces, the bottom and rim of the plate, both with very sharp edges all the way around.
I filled a mug from this set with water, not even hot water, just water. I picked the mug up and the handle crumbled in my hand nearly requiring stitches in about an inch long cut on my little finger. After 4 days the cut on my finger is still having trouble staying closed - this is a very deep cut, not requiring actual medical care, but very close. I have read reviews of this product since and have discovered MANY others have had similar experiences so wanted to make sure it was reported. Sears was where I purchased this and they would not help me file a report and would not refund the purchase since it was plus 90 days.
