Middle section of door glass fell out of the door and on to an 8 year old when he shut the door. My son closed the door and the middle section of window landed on his foot. The window did not break or cause injury other than a sore toe but it did scare him badly. Luckily he was wearing good shoes at the time of the incident but this really couldve caused significant damage.
While sitting outside today I heard a loud explosion and the sliding glass door next to me had shattered spontaneously. Nothing hit the glass, it just exploded.
The "thumb latch" on our Andersen sliding glass door (installed only 7 weeks ago) has experienced a mechanical failure exposing three small plastic ball bearings creating a risk of choking. The product includes a retaining ring which is snapping, subsequently exposing the internal components and rendering the latch useless. Two replacement latches were received from Andersen. One of the latches arrived broken, the second shows signs of initial degradation and is well on its way to being broken. When I outlined to the Andersen customer service representative that there is an apparent fundamental design flaw in this product I was told that I should utilize the ten year warranty to receive replacements. I find that ongoing replacement of a defective product is an unsatisfactory solution. Furthermore, the customer service representative indicated that this is a familiar problem and that their supplier has been advised of the issue and has taken steps to change their manufacturing process. I find it odd that the replacement product I received today has the same design flaw.
I injured my elbow on my Andersen sliding door while I was walking through the doorway. Andersen designed their "reach out lock" to have a protruding, stationary, metal pin on the door frame. Because the pin has no "give" to it, when I hit my elbow, the pin went right between my bones. I did not seek medical attention but asked Andersen to start an insurance claim for me as I have psoriatic arthritis, and being I couldn't use my elbow for two days after the injury, I'm concerned about future arthritis in that elbow due to the injury. Andersen sent a tech to my house to change the lock set to their newer design; which has a plastic, retractable, pin on the lock. They would not admit that they changed the design due to the safety hazard the old design posed. They also would not agree to recall the dangerous lock set either as I proposed to them. I am sure that there are many doors out there with the dangerous lock design. Since Andersen wouldn't follow through with an insurance claim for me, I'm sure they wouldn't follow through with other people's injuries either (unless a lawyer was involved) - so there's really no way to know how many other injuries from this occurred. I have also pointed out to Andersen several times that the pin is at eye level of a small child and, once again, having no "give", it could easily hurt a child's eye or even blind them.
We purchased and installed a shower door from Lowe's in Jackson, MI in April of 2013. July 3, 2015 one of our house guest was showering, we heard a loud CRASH and he was standing and bleeding in a pile of glass. I blamed him for "slamming the door too hard". He stuck to his story that he barely touched it and it just broke. I didn't believe him. Well, this past weekend on 8/23/15 a little 10 year old girl was using the new replacement shower and we heard a CRASH and then her screaming at the top of her lungs. Another exploding shower door. She was also bleeding with glass in her hair and cuts from head to toe. It was then I realized it was a faulty door or bad design. I find it hard to believe a 10 year old girl could fling it open to the point it breaks all over her. I apologized to the young man who broke the first one and told him I was going to call Lowe's. Lowe's in Jackson, MI initially told me they will NOT refund me for either door nor will they accept any responsibility. I just got a call that they are "working on a refund". I requested (on the first call) they pull the doors off the floor and quit selling them and he said we were the only complaint, so I'm sure they will continue to sell them. These doors are a HAZARD. Unfortunately, we did not get any pictures of the 2 incidents because, quite honestly, we were in EMERGENCY MODE and taking pictures was never on our minds. We are very fortunate both victims didn't end up in the ER since both were covered in cuts. Something needs to be done. Please help or advise. [REDACTED] in Brooklyn, Michigan
In October of 2014 purchased Andersen model 3000 storm door. I had it installed professionally by contractor for Home Depot from whom I purchased the door. Unfortunately, although installed correctly, the door slams shut with such force and so quickly that guests and family members have been hit on the back of the leg and or ankle causing severe bruises...fortunately no medical attention has been needed so far. This is a significantly heavy storm door and it slams to within a foot and a half or less of the door jamb before the 2 pneumatic cylinders stop the door and then slowly close it. This does not allow enough space or time for the person entering to do so without getting hit on the legs by the door. In researching this situation on the internet I have found quite a few purchasers of Andersen storm doors have the same complaint. My opinion is that Andersen is trying to avoid having to design a different pneumatic closure which stops the slamming of the door further away from the door jamb giving the person entering the space and time necessary to enter safely. Other then this situation the door itself seems to be well made and I prefer to find a way to overcome the stated problem but my contact with the manufacturer to date has been to no avail. They state that the door is working normally...even though injury to people entering is a destiny possibility. I would welcome further contact from Andersen to find a way to remedy the situation.
Recently purchased Kohler Sterling Vista Pivot II (#1500D) & had it installed. My husband & I had been using the shower for about a week & everything was fine. Normal usage. About 1:30am one morning we awoke to a strange sound & wasn't sure what it was, went to lay back down & then we hear a loud popping & screeching sound - we thought someone was breaking into our home. Our shower door had exploded into a million pieces. Thank goodness we were not in the shower or our 5 year old son.
I was installing a pgt windows and door product wen I notice the product is lose I call the company exchange got the same quality I install it it felt on a infant crush the infant instantly the infant was tapping the whole product collapse they are not a professional company as they said they are is devasting to me and the family I want to reach this agency hoping to get results..they have to be responsible.
