The submitter contacted the firm on July 18, 2018 to participate in the recall. She was told that the unit was included in recall # 18-113 and advised her that they would send out a technician to conduct the remedy repairs (verification # [REDACTED]). Approximately a week later she received the repair kit. On August 23, 2018 she contacted the firm again to follow up on the repair appointment and she was told that they would reach out to a local technician. On August 24, 2018 the unit stopped working. The submitter contacted the firm and she was told that a technician would come out the following week. The submitter said she had to buy a new unit because there is an elderly person in the home and the temperature was around the 90's. On August 29, 2018 the technician conducted the repair and noticed that the unit failed due to the defect described in the recall. The technician advised the submitter of the findings. The submitter claims that if the firm would have sent out a technician sooner, the unit would not have had an incident and she would not have been required to purchase another unit. The submitter has been communicating with [REDACTED] about a reimbursement but her request has been denied. September 21, 2018 Additional Information When the Tech came to install the recall part, the Tech ([REDACTED]) called me and I told her to forget installing part, as I was getting a new unit the next day. She wanted to go ahead, to avoid and responsibility on my part. When installing the recall part she called me again and said I needed to contact Goodman, as the recall part not replaced caused the unit to quit. My A/C service person quoted a cost of $519.00 to repair the existing unit, and it would take 7 to 10 days to receive the parts, he couldn't be without A/C that long. I talked to Gwen at Goodman, she refused to reimburse me for the new unit. I told her what my A/C person said about the cost, she the same as called him a liar, She
On 9-27-2018 at about 0348 hours I responded to [REDACTED] to investigate a fire in room [REDACTED]. Upon my investigation I found the fire originated in a wall HVAC unit. The fire was contained to the room of origin but significant smoke was on floors 3 through 12. I found that the HVAC unit malfunctioned igniting the combustibles where the heating elements were located. I spoke to the lone occupant of the unit. He told me he was chilled so he turned the unit to make it warmer when it started sparking and smoking. He called maintenance to report the unit. The unit then burst into flames. No one was injured.
This cooling coil product from Allstyle Coil Company, INC., Houston, TX is designed to be installed on top of a forced air gas furnace. Allstyle coil Model AS60M264T Serial 7D16264S. This was installed on a Rheem furnace per install instructions. My Brother and me are in the HVAC business and he was the one discovering this. This coil has a plastic drain pan. This pan melted, cracked and was falling down onto the furnace heat exchanger. The photo's we have show the plastic pan bubbling and show the plastic got very hot and this heat made the plastic crack and the plastic could then fall out of place. This appears to be a fire hazard. I am sure from the look of the plastic is must have been gassing off and smoking. Anyway my brother replaced the pan with a new one. I have my thoughts on why this occurred. I believe their design is defective. Anyway I can e-mail the several photos we have of this incident. My cell phone [REDACTED]/ [REDACTED]
(07/08/2017) The consumer stated that he has a natural gas and burning smell leaking into his home. When he smelled the gas, he cut the thermostat and the outside valve off. The consumer called the Home Warranty Company and reported the issue. He advised them that it was unsafe. A contractor came on Sept 7th. He opened the unit and found that the heat exchangers had pitted and rusted out. The contractors advised the consumers that he would refer the diagnosis to the warranty company. (09/15/2017) The consumer contacted American Standard and was advised to get invoices of when the unit was installed and all the service records. The consumer stated that his issue is not with American Standard but with the Home Warranty Company.
A Central Air-conditioner condensing unit located at a house I own caught on fire which burned up all of the electronics and even destroyed the inside thermostat. We checked for lighting damage and there was none, neither the unit or the house was struck nor was their any power surge. The unit was replaced before I was able to get the model and serial numbers when I asked what happen to the unit I was told it was scrapped. The unit was only 2-3 years old so at first I was trying to get the manufacturer to honor the warranty, but I had no paperwork on the unit so I did not try to even contact the manufacturer. Then I thought there are probably other similar units out there and did some checking and found out that this unit was discontinued, it was a whirlpool. Was it discontinued because of a fault ? I am in the process of trying to find paperwork, I have the installer information and the distributor where the unit was bought. Contact me if that information is needed.
We installed a Frigidaire wall-mounted heat pump/AC in September 2013. The unit has worked well, up until today when it malfunctioned and exploded. The exterior of the unit ripped open, and the compressor was ejected into the yard. Frigidaire position is that since the unit is out of warranty, they arent going to do anything and dont care what caused this dangerous malfunction.
The consumer had the unit installed by Comfort Windows (Syracuse, NY) on 4/13/06. The consumer stated that ever since the unit was installed there was banging and grinding noise coming from it. She contacted Comfort Windows in regards to the issue and they asked her to contact Carrier as they are the manufacturer. The consumer contacted Carrier and received no assistance. The consumer contacted Carrier again on 9/17/08 because she saw a recall on her unit. The consumer spoke to [REDACTED] and was informed that her unit did not fall under the recall. The consumer reported heating issues with the unit since Winter 2008. The consumer stated that the unit would go on and off. The consumer was provided numbers to two people in her area to contact for repair on her unit. The consumer was informed that she would have to pay for the repair. The consumer stated that there is an issue with the condenser of the unit. The unit gets really hot. The consumer contacted Conney Heating and Air (Syracuse, NY) on 6/19/14 and spoke to [REDACTED] for repair. The consumer canceled the appointment because it was not clear if the unit was under recall or not. The consumer had her electrician look at the unit. He informed her to contact someone to look into repair. The consumer contacted someone but was informed that she has to contact a repair shop that handles Carrier units. The consumer has not had any repair conducted on the unit. The consumer has contacted Carrier (800-973-3345/800-894-6449/800-761-8492) multiple times and was informed that her unit is not included in any recalls. The consumer's model # and manf date appears to fall under recall #08-073.
Fire hazard. ClimateMaster model TES049 geothermal heat pump wiring shorted out during normal operation in the early morning of August 22, 2020. The wiring harness was positioned close to the copper refrigerant line going into the compressor. Electric sparks from the wiring arced against the copper refrigerant line causing a pinhole leak in the copper line. R410A refrigerant escaped and filled the garage, where the heat pump was located, with freon gas. Prior to this incident, the heat pump was experiencing false high pressure/high temperature faults in the water loop system causing the unit to shutdown prematurely. The house could have caught on fire while the occupants were sleeping. This unit needs to be recalled immediately.
