Hunter Fan Company thermostat model 4420. This thermostat caught fire Saturday afternoon and damaged the thermostat and wall surroundings. This problem could have burned the house down if I had not been right there at the time of ignition.
On the morning of 9/19/15 I turned on Cadet model C2002 thermostat to 64 degrees. 5 minutes later the smoke detector alarm went off, and we found the heater up in flames and starting to bubble the wall paint. Doused with water and fire extinguisher. Removed charred thermostat and removed another same model thermostat to find that it had what looked like the beginning of smoke marks (black soot) on top of the thermostat. Removed it and had all 11 of the Cadet thermostats replaced irregardless of model the next day. Cost $400.00
I sent the following to Honeywell regarding an incident with an electric baseboard thermostat. The email was sent to the attention of [REDACTED] at ecc@honeywell.com **************************** After reading that some of your line level thermostats were being recalled, I contacted the recall hotline regarding a CT62B1015 that overheated on me. The recall hotline told me that this model was not on the recall list, and they referred me to customer service, who acknowledged that there were reported problems with this thermostat and referred me to you. One of the inside contacts (red wire,lower contact) is badly charred, the gray housing is also melted and charred and the wire insulation is melted. Fortunately, we smelled the overheated plastic and turned off the power immediately. I believe the problem is in the design or the manufacturing. The thermostat was installed by a licensed electrician. I have replaced the unit with another type of line level thermostat a Cadet TH110-DP-P, which I believe is also made by Honeywell. My reason for contacting you is to record the problem with my original thermostat. This model may need to be added to the recall list. Alkaline batteries in the blue back-lit touch panel thermostat leaked, causing the thermostat to fail, brief electrical burning smell, AC switched to heat mode- despite outside temperature being in the 80's. Had to shut off power to entire HVAC system to stop, now don't have AC.
In 2007 I bought two Honeywell RLV430 Thermostats which were installed by a licensed electrician. In the past weeks I noticed a grey discoloration on my paint on the wall - like smoke from a candle flame. This happened with two thermostats of this kind - one in my living room and one in my bedroom. I called another licensed electrician to look at it as I was concerned about it. The electrician stated that the two thermostats were installed correctly and that nothing was wrong with my electrical lines. They were also in line with what was required for my heaters. He advised to remove them as the "signs of smoke: were not only on my walls, but also inside the thermostats. I had him remove both and will have them replaced. I am worried that there might be something wrong with these thermostats and will email the company as well. OI have photos of my walls and will put one thermostat at the disposal of Honeywell should they wish to evaluate the unit. I am writing as I am not sure if others have reported the same issues.
We purchased a Honeywell RLV3120 Non-Programmable Thermostat and had it installed by an electrician in September of 2014. While it was in use for residential heating during cold weather I noticed that the top of the thermostat would produce a lot of heat. We had 2 new electricians check to make sure that it was installed properly and they found no problems. During the heating season of 2017 we were away on vacation and received a text message with a photo of the thermostat from a friend who was monitoring our home. The photo showed a large black burn mark on the sheetrock above the thermostat, exactly where I had always felt the worrisome hot spot. The thermostat was immediately disconnected and replaced.
I noticed that there were scorch marks above 3 of my 6 Honeywell RLV430 thermostats. I had a licensed electrician come look at the the wiring, thinking that it was the wiring in the wall that was causing the scorch marks. He said there was nothing wrong with the wiring, it was the thermostat unit, possibly a battery within the unit going bad. I now have the breakers to all the units shut off.
Its a fire hazards from the power supply its over heated and burnt the cord extension
