Last year I received a 315.101371 Craftsman hammer drill for Christmas which I was very excited about receiving. This past October while using it to drill some holes, in a wood project I was working on, the drill trigger stopped working and would no longer turn off. This put it in a very dangerous condition and damaged some of the project I was working on at the time as I needed to set the drill down in order to unplug it to turn it off. Since this time I have been trying to get into contact with Craftsman in order to notify them of the issue and to get the drill repaired or replaced. I have called multiple numbers and continuously get redirected to a new number or am told to go into a service center (I am told this is any store location). I went into the Boca Raton, FL store 3 weeks ago and notified them of the issue. They proceeded to further break the drill by pushing the lock button while the drill was running thus rendering it virtually unrepairable by breaking debris off into the motor. I believe this was their intent as they seemed fully aware of the issue when I presented it to them. I then talked to the store manager who refused to exchange it or provide me with the address to mail it in. I requested that the incident be elevated so that I could be sure the Sears and Craftsman teams were fully aware of this safety issue and the poor handling of the issue as a whole. The manager filled out an "elevation form" in their system and I requested to make sure he included that it was a safety related failure. I was told that I would be contacted in 24-48 hours after the incident report was filled. It has now been weeks and I have never been reached out to. I reviewed the reviews online and there are multiple complaints about this failure mode and the safety risk that it creates for the consumer. A Harbor Freight 5 speed Bench drill press plugged in not in use began smoking heavily . Unplugged the drill press and removed a panel to find melted insulation on several wires. Item 60238 Serial 366851619
I purchased a "HUBEST 3 Speed Mini Drill Press Machine 150W Mini Bench Table Drill For Craft Jewelers & Hobbyists, Sold by [REDACTED]" from Amazon.com on December 12th, 2018. I am convinced it has a dangerous problem. The motor within the drill head unit is not fixed and can swivel to either side. It is obvious the manufacturer is aware of this since there is a piece of stick-on foam tape on either side of the aluminum casting where the motor would touch after it shifts. The motor torque tries to shift the motor to the left as viewed from the front. The problem arises from a ground wire attached to the left-inside of the case. The brass wire termination is somewhat sharp-edged, and one of the blue power wires to the drill motor presses against it when the motor shifts to the left. When the drill press handle is operated, the motor moves up and down and the blue wire rubs quite aggressively against the sharp edge. The result is the scraping of insulation off of a live 120VAC wire that will eventually results in a contact to the drill press frame. The frame is grounded, which helps, but the contact could still cause a fire, or if the unit was plugged in an ungrounded socket, result in a "hot" device. I discovered this problem when I removed the top cover of the drill head, which is necessary to change the motor speed by moving the drive belt to a different pulley. I noticed that the drill seemed to hang-up slightly as I moved the drill press up/down, and this led me look closely at the motor assembly. Further inspection showed it was the interference of the wire causing the problem, and that revealed the scraped insulation. Please note that I never used the drill press. I was just testing it on my bench to ascertain the run-out of the spindle and how smoothly the handle worked. I probably never cranked the handle up/down more than a dozen times, and that was sufficient to cause the insulation problem. Unfortunately, the Hubest mo
