Was using the Porter Cable pcx362010 table saw at a customers home when it started smoking real bad . The saw continued to smoke after it was cut off and unplugged. Porter Cable's phone number they listed is not a working number. They are only offering 75.00 for refund of the saw and we paid over double that. They are also wanting you to destroy the saw and mail it to them. This is too much considering how much shipping cost for a product that size! The saw was less than a year old when it caught fire.
The saw is a 10" craftsman table saw, model #137.218072 Serial # RPV3009. This saw was purchased in January of 2012 and used only a handful of times prior to this accident. The saw is sold by sears as a craftsman saw, however is made by Rexon Manufacturing in Taiwan. During the normal course of ripping a board in half, I placed the board on the table top and while doing so placed both of my hands on the saws table top and it shocked me badly. The shock knocked me to the floor and either the shock itself or my hitting my head on a concrete floor in my garage rendered my unconscious for a period of time. I contacted Sears who advised me that they could do nothing about the saw and referred me to Rexon manufacturing. Rexon had an attorney, (a third party claims administrator in the US) contact me via email however offered to do nothing about the serious malfunction of this saw. At my request, Rexon did arrange for an engineer to come to my home to "check out the saw". I requested this as no other action appeared to be taking place. The engineer came to my home and did not check anything on the saw but instead only checked the wiring in my home and the outlet that supplied the saw to determine if the shock was the fault of my homes wiring. This accident occurred nearly 4 months ago and no action has occurred to remedy this malfunction, replace the saw, investigate the cause, or determine if this is a widespread problem with its. To date, the saw is still in my garage and I do not even receive follow up email from Rexon's claim administrator. I have since been diagnosed with sensorneural hearing loss in both of my ears and tinnittus resulting from severe shock/trauma caused by the accident. This product, for one reason or another, is a massive safety concern for anyone using it. Aside from being shocked, I could have just as easily been thrown into the cutting blade of this saw injuring me much worse than I was.
I received a recall notice about Porter Cable's PCX362010 10" Portable Table Saw - for the possibility of the motor overheating and creating a fire hazard. Strangely enough, this saw did start on fire and I had to replace it about a year ago, so I discarded it. The recall stipulates that I tell them the model and serial number of the product, but since it was actually on fire and since I had to toss a bucket of water on it and hose it down, I no longer have an intact nameplate to reference. I do though have the original box in which it was packed, complete with the Lowe's PO number under which it was shipped. So [REDACTED] and manufacture date 10/16, Lowe's Item number [REDACTED]. Anyway - this item did start on fire - there's a recall to refund those who have the serial number, but since mine was "lost in a fire" I have no recourse. Since my family gave it to me as a gift, I don't have the original receipts - but it was given as a Christmas present in 2016 Description: This recall involves Porter-Cable brand 10 table saws with model number PCX362010. The saws have a gray body with black accents and the Porter-Cable logo. The model number and serial number are printed on the table nameplate, located on the back of the saw body near the bottom. Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled table saws and contact [REDACTED] for a refund. Incidents/Injuries: [REDACTED] has received 61 reports of the table saw motors overheating and causing fires. One consumer reported smoke damage to their home. No injuries have been reported. Sold At: Lowes Stores nationwide from June 2016 through September 2018 for between $100 and $180. The consumer indicates that his wood gripper kept slipping. At one point his thumb went through the blade, cutting part of it off. The consumer was unable to find said part so he went to the emergency room and received six stitches on the three centimeter laceration. The consumer states that prior to the incident he used the unit three to four times per week as he woodworks for a living. The consumer plans on keeping the wood gripper for at least the next thirty days in case an investigation ensues.
I was using this saw to cut down some parts for a project that I was building. The saw had been turned on and off several times over the course of the time that I was working on the project. After finishing another cut I reached down and flipped the switch to the off position. But, the saw did not actually turn off. I repeated reaching down and turning the switch off a couple of more times with the thought in the moment that I had missed pressing the switch. When the saw still did not turn off I physically looked down at the switch, which is below normal eye line when operating the saw, and found that it was physically in the off position even though the saw was continuing to run. This fact necessitated actually pulling the plug from the socket to get the saw to turn off. Fortunately due to the layout of my workshop; reaching and pulling the plug was reasonably easy and the incident did not cause any injury or damage. However, if someone else were to encounter this issue and they were in a position where the saw had to be physically moved in order to reach the power cord; this would pose a significant danger to that person.
I own a table saw manufactured by Laguna Tools of Grand Prarie, TX. All table saws manufactured since 2008 are required to have a safety device called a riving knife, which prevents the cut part of the board from pinching together as it is passed through the saw. If the "kerf" or cut portion of the board pinches together, it will cause the saw to bind, which can lead to the board being forcefully ejected back towards the operator at high speed. In some cases it may even result in the operator's hand being drawn into the spinning saw blade. The riving knife on my table saw, Laguna model Fusion F1, has become very loose, causing it to be misaligned with the blade. This sets up a very dangerous operating condition. When I contacted Laguna's tech support, their answer was "do not use the saw as it is dangerous to operate in this condition." I asked them what the fix was and was told "to remove the riving knife clamp mechanism, clean and lubricate it, and re-install it." I asked how I might go about doing that and was told "we don't have a published procedure because it is straight forward." I pressed further on what the procedure was for doing what they suggested and got no answer, other than to suggest that "I am the first person to ever have a problem with this." I hold a degree in mechanical engineering and am quite familiar with tools and machinery, and I can say that there is absolutely nothing self-explanatory or "straightforward" about performing this repair. They are setting up an extremely dangerous condition with a table saw that they manufacture, and are being extremely negligent about addressing my concern.
Regarding Dust Collection Blade Guard (Model TSG-DC) for Sawstop Professional Cabinet Saw (Model PCS31230). The Inner Right Shell Half for Blade Guard (part TSG-DC-007) engaged the saw blade when the saw was off, so that when the saw was started, the blade broke the Inner Right Shell Half and sent plastic shrapnel toward the operator injuring his forearm. The injury required only a bandaid, but could have been much worse. The Inner right Shell Half for the dust guard is an elongate plastic panel on a pivot that drops down on the side of the blade guard along the side of the saw blade to keep the blade isolated from the operator. A similar part drops down on the left side of the blade. As a piece of wood is fed into the blade, these panels pivot up and ride on top of the wood so the blade is always protected. The concept is excellent, but when the blade guard was lowered down over the blade (after checking blade height) the inner right shell half evidently came down on the LEFT side of the blade. When the saw was started, the blade broke the inner right shell half and threw pieces toward the operator. The pivot on which the right shell half swings was not worn or otherwise damaged. A relatively simple design change would prevent this from happening by providing slots on the right and left side of the blade guard into which the inner right and left shell halves could slide to prevent them from coming in contact with the blade.
The power switch for the table saw is permanently on. The only way to turn the saw off is to unplug it. Moving the switch to the off position does not turn the saw off.
