I sustained a traumatic injury, avulsion laceration of the soft tissue of distal phalanx, 5th finger, right hand. The plastic handle caught my finger, pinched it and sliced off the soft tissue. I also have a chip fracture of the distal phalanx bone.
I bought a reach in cooler for my restaurant and the only thing holding on the door of 50 lbs is the trim plastic and it broke and hit my employee in the head giving her concussion bleeding in her head after hitting her. The door will never hold the way it is built and is unsafe to be on the market pitchers in closed of the little piece of plastic that holds the door on.
The consumer stated that the product has a retractable telescoping handle that collapsed while the product is being used. 06/2016) The consumer stated that he was trying to roll the cooler down the ramp to his boat. The handle collapsed and the cooler fell over to the left causing the consumer to fall over. When the cooler is moved by holding the handle with one hand and the cooler with the other hand, the handle will twist to the side. The consumer stated that the handle on the product cannot handle the weight of the cooler. (06/28/2016) The consumer contacted the firm to advise them of the issue. He was advised that they know that there is a problem and that the handle was in for a re-design. The consumer was assigned incident reference number-[REDACTED] (07/2016) The consumer was advised in July that they were sending him a replacement cooler. Per the consumer, the replacement cooler is the same as the original cooler with the same problem. (08/01/2016) The consumer contacted the firm to advised them that he had received the cooler but it had the same problem. The consumer received a reply that the product has a warranty for one year. He was also advised that there is a one time replacement that had already been done. No injuries.
Aluminum badge on Colman cooler bent causing cut to stomach. Could have resulted in stitches had I not been wearing a sweatshirt. This is the second time there was an issue. First time last year it caught my shirt causing it to rip. I folded over the sharp edge/corner the first time. The opposite corner became bent as it must have shifted in the back of my truck and caught on something causing it to lift/bend resulting in cut when removing cooler.
My wife's finger was cut in half to the bone and almost amputated on an Igloo 90 Qt. Flip & Tow Rolling Coolers. She is currently experiencing paralysis in the fingertip.
I ordered the RovR 45 ice chest in May and used it for a week. The cooler weighs 37 pounds empty, and fully loaded with ice and food tops 60 pounds. The handle is expandable, and similar to ones found on rolling suitcases. My experience with taking the cooler up or down stairs, loaded or empty, was the same. The weight of the cooler causes the handle to suddenly jerk to fully extended from the two section setting I was using. Because of the weight when the cooler drops, due to the handle expanding the weight shifts affecting my balance on the stairs. I have explained this to RovR customer support as a part of a return request asking them to take a look at this unit in particular, or all of their similar units as I believe this is a safety issue and a liability for RovR. The following are emails regarding this issue and customer reviews indicating that this is not an isolated issue.
I bought a Coleman power chill iceless 12-volt cooler model #5644 on Jan. 21, 2011 at Wal-mart in Poway CA. This model plugs into a cigarette lighter or to a 120V AC power supply. I have use the unit for the past six months while camping. I pluged in in using the cigarette liter in my 34' ft motor home. With in a short time and not realizing it the plug started to melt and over heat. Fortunately we found it before it started a fire in the motorhome. The plug was too hot to touch and the plastic was melting. The fuse is in the cigarette plug and it did not cut the power. I tried it again using the AC power adapter and again the plug became red hot. Needless to say we stopped using the unit right away. I receive a burn to my fingers. I look up simular complaints on the internet and found many people are having the same experence. In some cases they sent the unit still under warranty back to Coleman and they repaired it only to have the same problem again. Coleman wants me to send the parts back to them so they can send out new ones and I can repair it. I told them with all the complaints I have seen on the internet that I am no longe confident the product is safe, not only from electrical shock but fire hazard. It appears Coleman is doing nothing to correct the problem other then giving the consumer new replacement parts that are still defective. When I tried to return the cooler to the store it was past there 90 day return policy, but was told that they are receiving about one a week in returns.
Re: Safety Latches on Picnic Cooler Lids Dear Sirs and Madams: I am a retired engineer who worked for 23 years for the [REDACTED] in Wichita Kansas. During my time with [REDACTED](1967 through 1989) I was for several years the design engineering manager for thermal products (picnic coolers and jugs). In the early 1970s the CPSC brought to our attention that the latches on all of our larger picnic coolers could be hazardous to small children. You might remember that at one time old, discarded refrigerators with solid latching doors became deadly traps for kids. View your publication [REDACTED]. [REDACTED] had a proven, reliable latching system for all of our metal bodied, plastic lined coolers. We had never had one instance where a kid was injured by a [REDACTED]cooler and I personally did not believe that we posed a risk. We were building more than a million of this type of product annually. I traveled to DC to go before the CPSC and was instructed that we must change our designs. On returning from the DC meeting I ran a test with smaller children. We fixed several sizes of coolers so that each one had breathing holes and put these in a room with younger children and, without instructions (to the kids), simply watched. The kids were young enough that the latches were a mystery but they eventually unlocked the coolers. The kids soon opened the lids and got in the coolers. The kids hid in the coolers. Eventually kids sat on the lid when another kid was in the cooler. They would have found a way to lock another kid in the cooler. I was convinced that we had to change. [REDACTED] then changed the design of all medium sized and larger coolers so that the lid of the cooler could be pushed open from the inside with minimal force. We never saw any problems with the use or popularity of the coolers with the safety latch. All of this happened 50 years ago.
