I was using the product in the precise manner for which it was designed and I experienced a total failure of the trigger handle mechanism which resulted in a total failure of the airbag system. The trigger handle had completely separated from the pack. Upon inspection in the field, I discovered that the cable connecting the trigger handle to the airbag system was totally severed. It was impossible to repair in the field and I was left with a non-functioning and non-repairable airbag system. Prior to this incident, the airbag backpack was in excellent condition, and I always made sure it was stored safely when not in use. The cable failure was not due to any unusual use or handling, but rather from normal use. No injuries were sustained in this incident, however the product failure could easily have led to serious injury or death if the severed cable had not been discovered at such a time.
Black Diamond Equiptment acknowledged that their avalanche transceivers are electronically malfunctioning and they have offered no product recall. They have a safety alert. This is a product that my life and my ski partners lives depend on and Im not willing to use this product any longer but they arent offering any solutions or recalls. People will die in avalanches simply because their product is having electronic malfunctions.
Whilst skiing in Aspen I sustained a compression fracture of the tibial plateau as a result of a toe pin breaking on a pair of Marker King Pin Bindings. This caused me to fall resulting in the injury sustained. This injury has required surgery and will have a 6 month recovery period. These bindings are subject to a product recall but I had not been notified by either Marker or their dealer of the recall. The recall is posted on the Marker website. The Marker website still states, as of 5 March 2019, that no injuries have been sustained as a result of this product fault. I informed Marker in the USA and several other locations of my injury on 12th January 2019. No correction has been posted or any other remedial action proposed by Marker.
Downhill skiing with Atomic race 412 bindings year 05 under heel release. Skiing at a slow to moderate speed when I hit a small bump and the left ski binding released losing ski and falling (finding out later that it actually broke) as I came down on my left foot which through me to the ground landing on my left shoulder and hitting my head on the snow causing a concussion and injured shoulder, and yes I was wearing a helmet.
Last January (2010) I was skiing at Copper around a little hill, stopped, took 2 steps, stopped & committed to a turn. The next thing I knew I was careening down the hill head first landing for the icy catwalk. the skis had crossed in the back & the K2 signature metal pieces combined with the twin tip tails caught & would not release. I feel that this is a very dangerous design. It caused a very serious injury. I dislocated my shoulder and had a fracture of the humerus (2 chips attached to the rotator cuff had to be reattached). I am an expert woman skier and have never had this kind of fall. This never would have happened with my old skis. I was out for the rest of the ski season & had a long, painful rehabilitation. The medical records of this accident are enclosed.
atomic race 614 ski binding - heel cup broke without warning the failure appears to be the same (from the descriptions) as on the bindings that were recalled in 2009, I'm wondering why the Race 614's are not in the recall.
On 26th December 2014 I was snow skiing and as I bounced through the snow one of the skis completely collapsed in the first third of the ski. I fell straight forward and hit the ground face first. I was skiing at a moderate speed and did not hit any obstacle. It was very clear that I had not hit a solid object as there were no marks or damage to the base of the skis. I feel very strongly that these skis should not have failed so I contacted the manufacturer who checked the serial number and inspected my photographs and agreed to replace the skis under warranty.
I was skiing on an intermediate trail at Mt. Baldy, CA, making fast, sweeping GS turns. Toward the end of one turn, I suddenly fell backwards onto my back and head (I was wearing a helmet). I sustained a mild concussion, whiplash, and some pulled back and abdominal muscles. After picking myself up I noticed my left binding had failed -- the heel cup had split in two. I believe this is what caused the fall. Other Atomic bindings similar to this one have failed and been subject to a recall (http://www.cpsc.gov/en/Recalls/2009/Atomic-Skis-USA-Recalls-Ski-Bindings-Due-to-Unexpected-Release-Fall-Hazard/). This model, however, is not included in the recall, even though other consumers have reported failures (for example, http://www.saferproducts.gov/ViewIncident/1233037). I sent an email about this incident to Atomic, but they have not responded. Attached picture shows broken binding on left ski (on right in picture ). Note that heel piece is twisted outward.
