Caught on fire
Metal bracket that attaches ceiling fan blade to fan base snapped in two while circulating propelling the blade and shattering a glassed picture frame throughout the room. The bracket should never, ever break if properly manufactured using materials tested under stress simulating a fan's rigorous circulation. My limited research indicates this is not uncommon with manufacturers selling replacement brackets while failing to address the issue. Though several years old, our fan was manufactured by Hampton Bay a wholly owned subsidiary of Home Depot.
Hunter All-Fan Control (model 27185, s/n 277076) failed while not being used. I had this device installed in a fan canopy to control the fan and light kit via a remote controller mounted on the was switch. On 8/24/16, I returned home from being away for a week, when entering, I noticed a smell of burnt electronics when entering the kitchen (where the device is installed). A short time later, my wife tried to turn on the fan but neither the fan nor light would work, either with the remote or directly with the switches on the fan or light. I removed power from the circuit and disassembled the fan and found the remote control unit badly burned and melted. During the week I was away, there were no signs of a lightning strike to my home nor was there a loss of power. I contacted Hunter Fan but they have not been very helpful in trying to figure out what happened. All they have done is offer to replace the device. I have the failed device but they have shown no interest in having it returned for a failure investigation.
The consumer indicates that he turned the fan on and approximately four hours later he was awakened by the smoke detectors. When the consumer went into his sons bedroom he noticed that the fan was still on however it was caught in flames as high as one foot. The consumer immediately pulled the power cord out of the outlet, wrapped it in a blanket, took the unit downstairs and poured water over it with a garden hose to put the fire out. The consumer notes that when he was transporting the floor fan downstairs and as it was melting, some of the plastic landed on his knee, burning it. The consumer did not receive medical attention or first aid for his burns. The consumer states that the unit is used once weekly for about two hours. The consumer plans on keeping the floor fan for at least the next thirty days in case an investigation ensues.
Ceiling fan had been running at high speed when my roommate reported hearing a breaking noise and hearing something falling to the floor. She saw the fan blade on the floor (directly under the fan, a straight drop) and the remaining three still spinning, but wobbling. The fan blade did not hit her or anything else in the room. I saw that the bracket holding the fan to the rotor had snapped. I turned off the fan and did not see any cracks in the other brackets. The customer service representative I called within a week of the incident was really unhelpful. According to the rep, all she can do is sell me another part ($5 for part, $7 for shipping). The company takes no responsibility whatsoever, even when I pointed out that this was a very dangerous situation. The rep was really unmoved and completely unconcerned that someone could have been badly hurt. She denied that there have been any other incidents like this. All the rep wanted to do was sell me a replacement part, and kept denying any responsibility, saying that the fan was not covered under any warranty. I mentioned the Limited Warranty listed in the manual and the rep said since the fan wasn't broken when I got it, and since I installed it, Lowe's is also not responsible (since apparently I am assumed to have installed it incorrectly). I even got further clarification that if I had purchased a lemon and it had broken a day after I got it, the company would still refuse to replace the fan. (though honestly, I don't think I would want to replace a flawed product with another flawed product!)
It's a baby stroller fan just clipped to the stroller and it wouldn't go through all three setting only occasionally today a very strong smell like chemical coming from the fan as it charged then noticed the power button had melted. Purchased this fan on Amazon sold by Cambond
My wife complained ceiling fan was noisy, and some lights not working. When I started to change the bulb THE FAN FELL ON ME! It knocked me from the ladder, and I think it injured my hand and arm, my neck is also sore.
Flipped switch to turn light on, sparks and popping noise came from fixture. Took assembly down and found burnt area on top of fixture behind the decorative ring. (like electrical short) Fixture is about two years old. Will contact company.
