We had the fireplace for about 2 years. We use it mostly for the fake flame. We have used it for heat. We had the heat on for about 2 hours and it caught on fire and smoked and burnt out the controls.
We installed a "Heatilator" fireplace when we built this house in 2004. Since that time, the heat shields, specifically the rear, has failed and large cracks have appeared. This exposes the fire in the firebox to the inner layers, which are insulated, but not enough to withstand contact with the flame. I do periodically check for this, as well as any other problems I can observe. I have had the shields replaced whenever I see a potential problem (This comes at a cost of over $400.) My main concerns in this matter is not only the apparently inadequate materials that these shields are constructed of, but the fact that, if gone unnoticed, this may result in a fire hazard. I have contacted the company several times (Hearth and Home Technologies, Inc.). They have been unapologetic and unhelpful in assisting. They claim that their products are tested and adequately constructed, and told me to contact the installer, which I obviously already have dealt with. I don not believe their safety claims to be adequate and ask that the company be contacted for remedial action in this matter.
Fireplace continues to turn on by itself and we have come into the house with the unit on and unattended. Afraid it could start a fire with children in home.
CPSC INCIDENT REPORT 7/23/2025 I am reporting a safety incident with an Easy Home brand Electric Fireplace / Heater Unit. The product was purchased from an Aldi store in approximately late 2017 or early 2018. At 10:50pm CST Wednesday 4/30/2025 the unit exploded from the front side. The front glass panel shattered with glass scattered one to two feet in front and to the sides of the unit. I originally reported the incident to the customer service contact info provide by the manufacturer on Friday, 5/2/2025. The product was not in use at all at the time of the explosion. I was in the same room as the product, sleeping approximately 8 feet away from the unit. There were no injuries, however, had I been within 4 feet of the unit, it is likely that I would have experienced injuries such as cuts or lacerations or other similar injuries. Below is the text of the original report I provided to the manufacturer, and a second follow up email: 1rst email, Friday 5/2/2025: Hello, I am reporting a safety incident with an Easy Home brand Electric Fireplace / Heater Unit. PLUG BURNED AND MELTED APPEARS TO HAVE GONE ON FIRE
We were eating dinner and the our electric fireplace exploded sending shards of glass everywhere. The fireplace was plugged in but not turned on at the time of this event.
What happened that made you want to report? My electric fireplace exploded. I reported the incident to the Amazon CEO, where I purchased it. That office could care less about the danger or the harm to me and my pets. What type of product(s) were being used? Upesitom 36 Inch Recessed and Wall Mounted Electric Fireplace, 750/1500W Modern Linear Fireplace Heater, LED Fireplace Insert with Adjustable Flame Colors, Bracket, Timer, Remote Control, Black Who was using the product(s)? The fireplace was off. It had not been used in a few weeks. How were the product(s) being used? It was not in use at the time of the explosion. Were there any injuries that happened or may have happened while using the product? Glass in my face, feet, hands, forearms, hair. I sprained my wrists. The mantle fell off the wall and landed on me. It was painful and I bruised. I sprained my ankles I am still having pain and strugglilng to walk. Trauma to my pets. How did any injuries occur? I was covered with glass. My pets were covered with glass. When I tried to flee the explosion, and get my cats, I fell to the ground, twisting my ankles. I got glass in my feet, hands and forearms. Glass hit my face and covered my hair. I had to vacuum my hair and my pets fur. Over a week later, I am still stepping on slivers of glass. I sprained my wrists. I sprained my ankles, one of which I just had surgery on. I am still having pain and struggling to walk. There was damage to my furniture, carpet, cat toys, piano etc, as they were covered in glass and I had to throw them out.
I have tried to reach Home Depot, but the voice mail maze was futile. I received an electric fireplace as a gift in January 2019. I loved it and it worked great until end of May. I started to smell something strange and then the room immediately filled with smoke. I unplugged heater. I could see something white on the top of the fireplace where the small bars go across and it had bulged out. It was a Home Decorators Collection model SP5787. 1500 W 120V with Intertek #3165189. I'd like to find out your warranty and what I can do about having it replaced? Thank you for the help.
