I recently purchased multiple Regalo brand baby gates for my home as my son is growing more curious and gets into areas of my home that may be unsafe. One month ago I noticed a small white plastic piece had broken off the baby gate and represented a choking hazard to my son. I was upset but chalked it up to a defect in only one baby gate as the others seemed fine. However today my son pulled the identical piece off another Regalo baby gate in my home. I went around my home and removed this piece off all the Regalo baby gates in my home and saved them. The piece came off very easily. I am very concerned for my own son and others children as this piece comes off very easily and is the perfect size for a choking hazard. Thank you for your assistance with this matter.

Northstatesind baby gate wooden. I recently purchased this gate last week to be exact this gate is very unsafe. The hinges that hold the gate together are coming apart. My two year old son has removed the hinge and screws multiple times. The holes the screws that hold the hinges are only wood opening no molly or anything to secure this screw or hinge.. this may have caused a choking hazard had I not noticed the screw and hinge on the floor.. As I stated before multiple times... Secondly my two year old also has gotten his legs stuck between the spindles of this gate...

I purchased a Summer Infant Retractable baby gate and in less than 3 months of use, the bottom stitching has come apart and there are long strands of string falling off and little rubber decorative pieces at the bottom of the gate continuously fall off and are a choking hazard.

We installed a baby gate with a pet door. The next morning, I found a small piece of plastic on the floor (sized as a choking hazard). I realized it fits into the end of the pet gate; it is an end cap. It had come loose overnight. I put it back in and it slightly clicked. I emailed the company and they recommended I glue the end in place but did not say it was a defect or uncommon. This morning, my husband opened the pet gate to let our cat into the playroom where I was with our baby. I saw the end cap separate from the tubing. It could either fall out or easily be taken out and swallowed by a baby or small child.

Regalo Model 1850 G baby safety gate broke less than 2 weeks after I bought it I bought this (Model 1850 G) at Lowes on September 3 and installed it to keep my dog out of the kitchen. The installation went smoothly and I got it to work. When I came back from shopping today, I found a rectangular piece of plastic on the floor and discovered that the lower mounting bracket for the roll side had broken. This is therefore not something I would rely on to keep a child or pet from going somewhere he/she should not. A metal bracket might have been more durable (does not constitute engineering advice) but the bottom line is that I paid close to $40 (more with sales tax) and spent time on installation for something that did not last even 2 weeks. Also, the latch side does not seem secure and it seems that a child could easily pull it out to open the gate. I inserted a 1/2 inch wooden dowel to prevent this, but this also does not speak well for security.

Caller is reporting that her 4 year old child can easily open the latch for her pool gate which should not have happened. She stated that the child is only 33lbs, she stepped onto the bottom of the gate which disabled the lock. Fortunately she was present to prevent her child from serious harm or fatality. She is concerned that the gate is a safety hazard and should be recalled. The manufacturer was not contacted as yet.

Letter to Safety first with description of events: Installed baby gate per package instructions and verified it was solid myself yesterday. Today my daughter managed to push the gate open nearly falling down the stairs. Fortunately I was watching her from the stair side of the gate and was able to catch her. Had I not been there this would have been a severe injury or fatality as she is only one year old. Upon inspection I’ve found two major safety issues with the design of the gate: 1. The lower adjustment locks do not properly set the gate width, allowing the gate to come out of adjustment. This was the primary cause of the incident, the lower latch was not properly engaged. I re-adjusted the width of the gate to where it would latch properly, adjusting both top and bottom and re-locking the gate. After just 2-3 closings the bottom latch was once again out of adjustment. The locking mechanism that sets the width of this gate is poorly designed and unsafe (I have designed guarding a in industrial settings myself) and I did indeed doubt the design when I saw it. I have retrofitted my gate with permanent screws and this appears to have solved the problem. 2. The door stop latch does not stay in position. Over the last day I’ve had to reset this stop multiple times. After the insistent I’ve also secured this stop with a screw. Fortunately today I was with my daughter and was able to save her. However some one else may not be so lucky. I implore safety first to issue a recall on this gate and address the two issues before returning this gate to market. Follow up comment: as a professional who works as a design engineer for guarding had this happened at work it would have met the criteria to be filed as a near miss and recorded as a safety incident for OSHA reporting purposes.
