The caller stated that the while he was snowboarding down a slope the bindings cracked, his left foot slipped off the board and became stuck in the snow causing his ankle to dislocate. He was taken to the hospital in Big Bear Ca. where he was treated and transported to Loma linda hospital for further treatment. The binding broke apart during normal wear and tear. Consumer spoke with mfr and they wanted him to send them the product, and they would replace it as a "get well soon" gift. I had modified the binding color on the cloth on top of the foot latch only, and the part that failed on me was the hard plastic base. This should never have happened. UPDATE: I have over 15 years of snowboarding experience and what happened to me on March 18th 2013 was the frrst time I have seen or heard of this type of equipment failure. I was out with my stepson and his friend celebrating his birthday on a beautiful spring session. The weather and snow surfaces were ideal that day so I feel there were no factors that could have contributed to the reason my binding disintegrated while I was boarding down a black diamond run. I was traveling down a run that I have visited on several occasions while at Snow Summit ski resort in Big Bear CA. I was traveling a speed that I am very comfortable with while maneuvering to a trail crossing I started to slow up as I turned to the left everything was fine and then I started to tum to the right to head down another trail when my front foot began to wobble and then became dislodged from my snowboard. My foot planted into the soft snow and the momentum caused my left foot to become dislocated and break my fibula while I violently crashed to the ground. This was the worst pain I have felt in my life as well as the sight of my foot being turned the wrong direction was very difficult to deal with. Thankfully, the consumer´s child was unharmed. The consumer states that the unit was twice prior to the incident. The consumer plans on keeping the flexible flyer for at least the next thirty days in case an investigation ensues.
Union Bindings Company - 2022 Explorer Splitboard Bindings The bindings can be mounted to the splitboard in both "ride" and "touring" position. In ride position, they are mounted to two sets of plastic discs that are mounted to the board via metal plates. The bindings are then put on over the discs and rotated 90 degrees into riding position. A metal pin is then inserted through a hole in the baseplate of the binding, through the channel of the plastic mounting disc and into another hole on the other side of the baseplate to lock the binding down. There is a plastic arm that is attached to the end of the metal pin at 90 degrees. This arm is used to rotate back into a plastic locking mechanism on the outside of the baseplate. At the end of the plastic arm, there is an indentation where it should snap into the locking mechanism, but there is also a hole in this spot which they tie a canvas like string to attach to the rear strap of the binding. If this string is not attached, you risk dropping and losing the pin in the snow which would render the bindings completely useless. This attached string does not allow the plastic arm to press down enough to click into place in riding mode leaving it susceptible to slipping out while riding. I've attempted to push the pin arm into locking position with my hands wrapped around the unmounted bindings for leverage. With the string attached, it's impossible to get them to lock in place in a warm living room, let alone mounted to a board covered in snow on the mountain with cold hands or gloves on. When unlocked, the pins slip out of the baseplate and discs extremely easily. I have tested them out for 3 days riding resorts to try to get them to work, but they fail almost every single run. This has caused the bindings to rotate 90 degrees mid ride and has even caused them to pop off multiple times. Luckily I stuck to easy runs with no obstacles, so while I fell multiple times I wasn't hurt more than a few bruises or pulled muscl
I was snowboarding using a snowboarding binding produced by the company Union Bindings. The binding is called the Explorer. The pin locking mechanism that holds the binding onto the snowboard came unclipped. The pin then walked it's way out of the binding and my foot and the binding were able to rotate and disengage from the board causing me to crash. Fortunately I was not injured but I could have been seriously injured. The fact that the pin locking mechanism failed, came unlocked, and allowed my foot to disengage from the board could have led to me loose control and crash into a tree or other object. It could also have led to me twisting or breaking part of my leg or knee since now one foot was connected to the board and the other was not. This has happened to me multiple occasions and it is clear the design of the pin locking mechanism is defective and dangerous. After searching online I found numerous other owners of these bindings are experiencing the exact same issue.
I'm a professional snowboard equipment reviewer who has done my job for 20 years. In 2019 I saw a 3D rendering for a new snowboard binding that was being touted as the future of snowboarding. In that 3D rendering I noticed some fatal design flaws that only someone as experienced as myself would and expressed my concerns. The designers of the product dismissed my knowledge base immediately. Fast forward to 2022 and they are rolling out their product and I express my concerns for their product and their limited knowledge of how snowboard bindings work. In 2023 after demand from my audience I bought a pair to review and upon getting the product in my hands and inspecting it I noticed catastrophic design and manufacturing faults. I then took the product to Copper Mountain in Colorado to test them. I posted on [REDACTED] that I was testing them and 3 different employees from 3 different shops reached out to me and informed me that the mounting hardware that they use was not up to industry spec and were sheering off inside the inserts that they screw into and I was advised to swap out the screws. Upon riding the product I noticed that the locking mechanism that they claim has a fail safe failed me on 3 different laps down the slopes I was testing it on. This caused the safety hook and locking mechanism to disengage and allow the foot to release. As I'm a highly experienced snowboard rider with over 3900 days on snow I knew how to safely stop myself from being injured. But, what I've noticed is that this company will not acknowledge publicly to anyone that these have this issue. Upon further inspection after riding them for only 4 hours I noticed severe deterioration of the plastic used in the product, that the screws had shown signs of fatigue, and that the locking mechanism was already starting to wear and fail. In my expert opinion and as someone who has ridden hundreds of snowboard bindings I could see this failing to the general public. After concluding my review of

I, a 28 year old woman, was using the 2022 Explorer Bindings on the ride down the pin to hold the binding on my board together in ride mode came undone 5 separate times. It was terrifying being unable to control my board in a no-failure situation. The first time I heard clinking on my board as I was riding down and glanced back to see the pin flopping on the tether behind me. This happened multiple times on the front and back bindings. Worst of all was my final run the front pin came undone and my front binding began to twist off losing my front angle and causing me to have to emergency stop. These bindings are straight up unsafe for use and should not be used in the backcountry where the consequences are so high. I was using the product to the specifications and sent the company a video of the locking mechanism coming undone with very little force applied. I did not sustain any injuries but had to make multiple emergency stops.
