I had just started to use my Ryobi sheet sander to restore an old desk. I plugged it in, it began to vibrate like it should and then within about 3 seconds it jolted to a stop and made a kind of pieces going everywhere noise. Dozen of small pieces fell out. I was just about to hand it to my 10 year old daughter. Thank goodness I didnt. No one was injured.
I was using a Ryobi sander - model number S615D. About 10 seconds into light use, the power tool exploded sending metal and plastic material in my face and all over the room. It appears the motor blew up which caused this explosion. I needed to remove particles from my eye and face. This is a lightly used tool and it was being used to sand a drywall patch at the time indoors.
I purchased a resold Ryobi sheet sander S651D from the company Cannons Online Auctions in VA, invoice #[REDACTED] (www.cannonsauctions.com). The sander exploded in my hands, causing injury and damage to my home with metal pieces shooting off and embedding in my walls.
Makita BO5001 orbital sander base pad disintegrated while in use
A Ryobi Palm Sander model S6510 exploded while using it, and metal shards grazed my forehead causing minor injury. I subsequently found out that this had been recalled and called the recall line to report. They said someone would be contacting me, however after several month, no contact. I called again today, waited 14 minutes while they researched it, and was told again that someone would contact me. Obviously Ryobi doesn't take this process seriously.
While using the Ryobi SD651 1/4 sheet orbital sander the fan inside broke apart. Pieces of the fan did shoot out, luckily I was not injured. I contacted Ryobi and the said they would fill out an incident report and send a box so I could return the unit.
My name is [REDACTED] I am a 50 year old woman that has enjoyed wood work and power tools since I was in the 7th grade. I was just starting a project where the top of a walking stick needed to be leveled off. The walking stick was less than an arms length away at about shoulder height. I had lightly touched the area about 3 times for a collective of time of about 45 seconds. There was no indicators like smell or sound that a unexpected and violent explosion was about to happen. Then It happen the Ryobi exploded in my hand. I was dazed confused and in shock at what had happened. I set down the Ryobi sander and unplugged it. 3 sizable chunks of sharp shrapnel busted thru the left side and front of the body of the sander obliterating those sides. I left the garage and went into my home where I continued to be in shock for a while. once the shock started to subside I realized I had a horrible headache my ear was painful and had ringing and the right side of my face was swelling. I woke the next morning with a worse headache a low ring in my ear and added symptoms neck and shoulder pain. Early that afternoon I went to urgent care. The Dr confirmed that I have a concussion, checked my ears and thankfully the drums are not injured. She also noted my swelling and sore neck and shoulder. She advised this pain and swelling would subside in a week or more.
Milwaukee Tool Company random orbital sander model 6021-21 (5") has a on/off switch on the handle. This switch, when pressed for OFF apparently does not completely shut off the sander. The sander then restarts. While sanding some wood, I shut off the sander and placed it on top of a pile of wood over my head. The sander turned ON, spun around and fell off in front of me. I reached to catch the sander and received a deep laceration (to the bone) on my right thumb. Emergency care center sewed it back up with a large number of stitches. The laceration was deep enough to sever a number of nerves rendering the thumb partially insensitive and appears to be permanent damage. I still use the tool and it will turn ON without warning about 50% of the time after being shut OFF.
