We were informed of a Schneider circuit breaker panel recall of its QO line when we experience serious rusting and overheating in our Schneider breaker panel, which was only installed 1.5 years ago. Our panel is a Homeline panel and not part of the recall, however the manufactured date code matches the QO recall. We are having to pay out of pocket for a full replacement, and in the meantime, less than half of our house has electricity.
On Sunday September 25 2016, a fire was reported at [REDACTED] in Knox County, Tennessee. Fire was determined to have started in a electrical disconnect box for the HVAC unit. 5 other boxes also showed similar damage from a high resistance heating connection where the breaker snaps onto the bus bars. All units were installed in 1990 and were Square D model QO200TR with 30 amp breakers installed.
We plugged our [REDACTED] into our 240 v power [REDACTED] charger, which had been installed by an electrician and permitted by the city. After charging for 3% the charging stopped. The circuit breaker appeared to have blown. When my electrician arrived to fix the issue he discovered that the circuit breaker had not blown but had actually caught fire and burned the fuse box. The electrician explained it should never happen and appears to be a defective product. He has seen numerous other Eaton circuit breakers fail, when used with electric vehicles, but this is his first experience with one causing a fire.
Electrical panel has tripped several times. The one that tripped is very hot to the touch
The consumer's husband works in the basement and sometimes uses an electric heater. Their basement developed an odor and they believe that it started around 3/8/2010. The consumer had the installer check her furnace and hot water heater, but they did not find anything. The consumer noticed a burning odor in her home and a dead-mouse like odor around September 2010. (9/16/11) The consumer had an electrician come out to her home and he checked the breakers in the home. The consumer electrician was familiar with this problem and he was able to identify that the circuit breakers were the problem. The electrician removed 4 of the breakers, but he plans to come back out on 9/19/11, to replace all of their breakers. The electrician said that the consumers could have had a house fire. The corners of the breakers were burned, but damage was limited to the breakers. The consumer also check www.saferproducts.gov and she said that someone reported a similar problem on 4/27/2011, with this same exact mfr's breakers.
Siemens circuit breaker-- double 30A "2 pole Type QP" Household use-- connected to air conditioner. One pole tripped, but did not cause second pole to trip. This caused an overheat/arc situation, resulting in the spring clip of one pole breaker to melt to the busbar in the panel, and damage to the outer casing of the breaker.
On Saturday, 7-28-12 I lost partial power to my pole barn. I went to my main fuse panel in the house and heard electrical sparking. I removed the face panel and could hear it was coming from a 60 amp breaker which fed my pole barn. I put a screwdriver on one of the screws and tightened and the sparking went away. On 7-29-12 at appx 6pm my compressor in the barn kicked on and I heard a loud crack. All of my power in the barn was out. I went downstairs to look at my panel. There was black residue on the panel cover. I removed the panel cover and noticed that both of the legs were black and the 60 amp breaker was tripped and angular. I checked voltage and there was none at the 60 amp breaker. I pulled the 60 amp breaker out, for replacement purposes, and the panel began to arc. I tried to pull the main, 200 amp breaker but it would not move. The panel is on fire and electricity continues to flow into the panel. The wires and breakers were burning. I used two fire extinguishers on the fire. The fire department responded and pulled the meter. If I had not been home I am sure the house would have caught on fire. Luckily the damage, smoke, was confined mostly to the basement of my home. I still have the damaged panel in my possession.
1. My sister was renting my condo from May 2013 to August 2014. During that time, a ceiling mounted track lighting fixture with four lights "blew up". She also reported having repeated electrical problems with kitchen outlets not working. No irregular use. No Injuries. 2. I moved into my condo in August 2014. I also experienced kitchen outlets not working. Also my FPE box has loose circuit breakers. One of them was so loose, that when turned back on, the outlets connected to that circuit, remained dead for several minutes. The FPE box would cause that circuit to fail. I therefore replaced my panel box in June 2015.
