(09/01/2012 5am) The major lines from the dish to the junction connector shorted out and caught on fire. It burnt the vinyl siding on the end of the house near the top of the roof line. About a 100 sq.ft. of vinyl will have to be replaced. The consumer stated that he used a water hose to put the fire out. It took him about 30 minutes to get it under control. The consumer stated that he also called the fire department. The consumer stated that the fire was out when the fire department got to his house. The consumer stated that he called the cable company on the same morning. A technician was dispatched the same day. Pictures were taken and the a new dish was placed in a different locaton. The consumer stated that he would not let them take down the old dish because it is evidence.
The consumer stated that at about 2:30 am he heard popping and crackling noises coming from the device. He said that "it sounded like fire crackers going off". He also said he thought he saw a small blue flame coming from the device, but I could not see any indication of burning.
The submitter states that the antenna stopped working and when he inspected the box, which plugs into the wall, he noticed there were melted case. The submitter then took apart the box and noticed burned wires. The submitter believes the power supply has a faulty design and should not be sold. The submitter also noticed that the product does not have a UL marking. The submitter is concerned this product can cause a fire. The submitter has another unit but does not plan to use it. The submitter contacted the retailer and informed them of the incident. The submitter also asked about the product warranty but he was told that the warranty coverage could not be applied because he abused the product. The submitter was told that the voltage used on the product could not exceed 110 and he has voltage in his home running between 117-120. The submitter could not find manufacturs information for the firm and is unable to contact them. The submitter said he contacted UL and informed them of the incident. The submitter was informed to contact CPSC. The submitter insisted that the brand is Market Star and he said the product is also sold under different firm names.
