I own a Ariens snow blower / thrower and the blades keep spinning, even when they are disengaged (or the users releases the engagement handle)
The consumer noticed a fuel leak in his unit. He said it leaked enough to drain the tank in one sitting. The consumer contacted the firm today who told him the serial number falls outside of the range of the recall. The consumer says the company should be repairing the unit at no cost. The serial number falls just outside of the recall for Release #10-299.
I have a Toro Power Max HD 826 OXE Model Number 38805 snowblower. Ser# 316005999. I purchased this snowblower from Toro on 2/6/2016 for $1299 plus state tax. While normally using this snowblower, I started the engine using the 120Volt Starter. To do this, you plug and male end of an extension cord into the starter motor switch and plug the other end into a 120 Volt outlet. During normal operation I discovered that the ground pin on the snowblower had broken off and was left in the extension cord. I didn't notice this problem until I tried to use the extension cord for an unrelated purpose. It was then I found the ground still stuck in the extension cord. The problem is that the snowblower is no longer grounded. If I start the snowblower in a snow storm or while the ground is wet I could receive an electrical shock. Fortunately, I noticed this while I was starting the equipment while I was in my garage on dry ground. I contacted Toro and they simply said to bring the snowblower to an authorized dealer to have the starter motor replaced (approx part cost $340, labor extra) They said the unit was no longer in warranty and wouldn't replace the part. They also said there was no replacement part for the switch...the entire starter had to be replaced. The pin that broke was not attached to the starter switch very well (I have photos). I spoke to my dealer and they said this was a fairly common problem with the Toro snowblower starter. The starter was made in China.
My Ariens snowblower which is less than three years old leaked gas onto the garage floor. I took it outsiide and started it to use up any remaining gasoline. After a short time, the engine shut off. I went into the house and a few minutes later, the snowblower burst into flames. The fire department was called. Luckily no one was injured, but my $1700 snowblower is ruined.
I have a Power Clear 180 and I still have the leaking gas problem. I received the recall and brought it to the dealer for repair. When I got it back, it leaked gas immediately. Took it back and they replaced the carburetor. Checked a few weeks ago, and it is leaking gas again. Not sure why Toro is not doing more to correct this problem. In my opinion, this is a major safety problem.
While using my snow blower this past winter, the unit got stuck in drive.
All the gas runs out in the garage. Gas is coming from the carburetor, not the gas tank. All the gas leaks out into the garage- this is a fire Hazard. Hard to estimate how much gas to put in, to remove the snow. The first year - It ran good. Toro was an established good product. The second year - It ran good the first month, but seemed like the snow thrower was loading up. Got new spark plug. The third year - It ran good at first, but acted like the previous year. The fourth year - It ran good again, but soon seemed like it had 1/2 the horsepower -- same as other years. This snowthrower is used by me only in Dec. and Jan. as we go south for Feb. and Mar. I also run the gas out in early spring. We have gone south for 13 years. Very few hours on snowthrower. This is like recall for the Toro 1800 -- ? Toro's other snowthrower being recalled.
11/2010 Consumer stated that he noticed that his snowthrower was leaking gasoline from the caburetor, and he feels that this is a fire hazard and it was not on the recall list but should be recalled. Consumer stated that he didnot have any other problems with the unit. Consumer had not contacted the manufacturer as yet.
