For about 6 months in 2014, my wife and I smelled oil fumes in our house but we were unable to find the source. Service calls to clean and check the oil-burner furnace system failed to find any leak. The oil tank was a Roth Double-Wall Tank (DWT) that was installed in 2006 and still under its 10-year warranty. It is equipped with a visual leak indicator and it showed no leak. From July to December, my wife experienced a range of illness that caused her to seek medical treatments about 30 times. Her symptoms included frequent head and stomach pain, nausea, eye irritation, poor appetite and significant weight loss. The cause of these symptoms was unknown and all the treatments were ineffective. On 12/8/2014, I finally discovered oil fumes were coming out of a corner at the top of the DWT. When it was reported to Roth, they alleged that the leak was caused by improper installation and denied the tank was defective. As an experimental physicist experienced in fluid handling systems, I investigated the cause of the leak and came to the conclusion that the design of the DWT is fundamentally flawed. Its inner plastic tank is prone to rupture and the leak indicator does nothing when it happens. This poses considerable health and safety hazards to every household where a Roth tank installed. The product should be recalled regardless of warranty period. A summary of my experience with the DWT is given below and more details are given in the attached report. ************************ Roth markets the DWT for heating oil storage in residential homes and claims superiority over common steel tanks in both safety and durability. The extra protection is afforded by the two "completely sealed" tanks and a "highly visible optical leak alarm" that alerts the homeowner if oil leaks out of the inner tank into the wall space between the two tanks. However, both of these safety claims are essentially false. The DWT uses an inner tank made of plastic to prevent corrosion.
The consumer says her maintenance man told her three year old burner is cracked and there is a great big hole as big as a baseball. She says the steam in the unit has been going up the chimney since November. Consumer says it takes a very high temperature for her to heat the house. She says it has to be at 74 degrees just to heat to start up. She contacted the manufacturer and they told her the water in the area was too harsh. Consumer said they offered no remedy or assistance.
The furnace was installed on 09/24/14. On 02/20/15, at 7:45am, all of the smoke alarms in the house went off. The consumer woke up to black smoke all over the house. The consumer opened up all of the windows and called the fire department. She ran outside to see if there was a fire. The consumer saw black smoke coming from the exhaust pipe of the furnace. The consumer ran into the house and turned off the furnace. She went back outside and saw that the smoke stopped. The King George Fire Department came out by then. They inspected the house along with the consumer. They informed the consumer that the furnace exhaust pipe was iced over resulting in back exhaust. The consumer contacted the installer on 02/20/15. The installer sent out two technicians the same day. They examined the issue and communicated their findings to the engineers at Thermopride (mfr). The consumer stated that the technicians were informed to remove the T-coupler (where the freezing took place). The technicians made some other modifications/repairs but the consumer is not aware of those. The consumer continued to use the furnace after that. The consumer stated that in early April, the same technicians were sent over to her home to perform some repair work as instructed by Thermopride. They noticed that the heat exchanger was broken. In the absence of the heat exchanger, the technicians were unable to perform any work on the unit. They informed her to ask Thermopride for a new furnace instead of having it repaired so much. The consumer contacted Thermopride. They put her through with the chief engineer, [REDACTED] . The consumer was informed by [REDACTED] that there were no replacement units available as of now. He stated that the company is not manufacturing these furnaces at the moment. The consumer was informed that the units would not be available until late summer/early fall 2015. The consumer asked [REDACTED] why the company stopped manufacturing the units. The consumer w
New Boyertown hot air furnace installed to replace original fifty year old furnace in house. Furnace was installed by a licensed plumbing and heating contractor October 19. 2017. The day of installation my wife and I noticed that the furnace seemed loud and my wife also detected an odor discharged from the hot air vents. The contractor came back with the representative from the distributing outlet. They did not detect the odor but did recommend two remedies for the noise. A cover was installed over the burner housing and a different section of fuel line was attached to the burner. The noise was reduced but at intervals continued throughout the time the furnace has been in operation. The odor has been continuous and progressively worsened until the furnace was shut down. The fuel nozzle fowled in mid January 2018. This was found after I went down to check on the furnace because it was running continuously and very little air was being discharged through the vents. I checked the air filter and found it to be obstructed with a black carbon color. I removed the filter to allow air to flow. The odor from the vents woke my wife and she asked me why it all of a sudden had become worse. The contractor came in the following day and replaced the defective nozzle. The house was checked by two different fire departments detection equipment for hazardous materials and neither found any. The fumes continued and on February 15, 2018 I removed the side panel from the furnace and discovered the holes from the combustion chamber into the air distribution system. I notified the contractor, he notified the distributor, and they came and viewed the took pictures of the combustion chamber and surrounding area. The matter has caused the distributor to stop communication with contractor. The manufacturer has not communicated with us or the contractor or the contractors insurance carrier. On 12/22/24 we started to notice an acrid smell coming from all of our heating air ducts. The smell lasted for two days and when a technician arrived on 12/24/24 the smell was gone. The technician checked the furnace to make sure that it was operating properly and also checked for any possible carbon monoxide. He could find nothing wrong at that time with the furnace. On 12/29/24 the smell returned, and a technician came out on 12/30/24. The furnace had been serviced by this same company in September 2024 for the winter season. The furnace and A/C system was installed new by this same company in September 2019. This company is in the local area and has been in business for 75 years. With further inspection by the technician on 12/30/24 it was determined that the plastic drain pan under the A/C evaporator coil was actually burning and scorching from the heat of the oil furnace. Our furnace and A/C iis called an up-flow setup. The A/C evaporator coil sits directly over the oil burner furnace enclosed by the furnace sides. This is a standard normal installation. It is incomprehensible to me why anyone would put a plastic drain pan over a heat source. I was told by the company that installed the furnace that plastic drain pans are the standard in the industry. In my opinion it should be made of aluminum like the evaporator coil. The pan is available separately from the coil, but my concern is that if they put in the same plastic pan, I will have the same problem a few years from now. I am concerned of a possible fire hazard and health hazard from the fumes coming from the scorched and burning plastic. The second time this happened on 12/30/24, I had a burning of my eyes and a slight headache. I read of a recall concerning other plastic drain pans manufactured by Goodman manufacturing.
