On several occasions the Ritetemp vent free gas heater thermostat has caused the gas to come out of the burner without igniting even though the pilot was burning. 3 times I was not in the room at the time and when I returned to the room it was filled with gas fumes - the pilot was burning in each occasion. On several other occasions I was present - sometimes the burner lit with a woooofffff. Other times I turned heater off by lowering the thermostat then when I turned it back up it lit correctly. It is certainly an unsafe situation and I feel lucky my house didn't explode.
Ryobi Forced Air Propane Heater, while using smell something burning, turned it off and a flame was visible between the flame tube and the outer housing. Upon further examination the wires connecting to what I assume a thermal switch on the flame tube were burning. I had to blow them out. I have pictures of these charred wires which I believe is a major safety issue.
The consumer states that the heater has a plastic igniter switch that attaches to a metal bracket on the back of the unit. He had started the unit on its highest level in his garage with the garage door opened for approximately fifteen minutes when he noticed that the top of this igniter switch had caught fire with flames about four to six inches high. The consumer immediately turned the valve off to shut the heater off. The fire did not spread and eventually ceased. The consumer contacted the manufacturer and explained the situation. The representative he spoke to informed him they had never heard of such an incident occur and so they will send him a shipping label so the consumer can send the product back to them for investigation. The consumer indicates that prior to the incident occurring, he had only used the heater twice for approximately three to four hours each time, and that the day of the incident was the first time he had set it to its highest setting. The consumer does not plan on keeping the unit for at least the next thirty days.
I was exposed to a low-level, injurious concentration of carbon monoxide (CO) over a 4-month period by daily use of a gas-log fireplace heating system installed in the un-vented mode. I believe this system lacks sufficient safeguards to maintain the high efficiency necessary to be used un-vented. I learned that a change in position of the logs results in sooting, which is a visual indicator that CO is being produced. In my case, a fairly heavy soot coating on the walls and windows finally alerted me to the hazard, but it was not until after I suffered a sudden 90-percent loss of hearing in my left ear on December 23, 2011. I subsequently learned that long-term exposure to low concentrations of CO can lead to health problems because of the cumulative effect, with a retention time in the bloodstream of several hours. In my case, it was four months of daily exposure each evening to a low-level of CO (our CO detector, with a threshold of 100 ppm, provided no indication). The result, as verified by a physician, was nerve damage that caused hearing loss along with unsteadiness and vertigo. I've attached a technical paper that describes the link between CO and hearing loss. When the heating season began, I moved the logs to relight the pilot after turning it off for the summer. The owners' manual presents vague warnings about moving the logs and an incomprehensible diagram of log placement, but there is no warning that directly relates to a specific hazard of CO. Later, after the logs were reset and cleaned by the original installer, they shifted on their own to again cause sooting. There is no way to lock the logs in place. Had this been a vented installation, there would have been no problem, but the dealer's selling point was that the high efficiency of the burner makes it perfectly safe to be un-vented. When it is vented, of course, it provides substantially less heat to the room/home. Beyond the direct effect such as I experienced, it is known that CO

This caller purchased a wall heater approximately three years ago from retailer in [REDACTED]. The heater is connected to a gas line on a wall in a Sun Room. She had no problems with the heater until March 29th, 2017 when her son who informed her that he had been standing around the area where the heater is placed on the wall, he walked away and the heater just exploded. There is a tempered glass insert at the front of the two foot wide heater that shattered all over the front of the heater, on the floor directly in front of it and went out onto the area of three feet from it. She states that she is reporting this as a severe hazard of laceration due to the force of the explosion as well as the larger pieces of glass that flew out from it. There are no injuries being reported She did try to contact the Pro Con Heating, numerous times since the day after the incident when she spoke with [REDACTED] [REDACTED] took a report but did not provide a report number although this caller sent pictures also.
(01/28/2025) The gas logs that are used in the heater is causing the filter in the consumer's CPAP machine to turn black. The consumer suspects that the heater is sending black smoke into the air. When the consumer does not use the log, the filters are clear.
