My daughter was using the Disney branded Phineas and Ferb Walkie Talkies for the first time. I noticed they do not work well as [REDACTED]. She brought them to me and said she didn't want to play with them anymore. When she handed it to me, I noticed one of the units was very hot (not warm) to the touch. I opened the unit and pulled out the four batteries that we had put in before our daughter started to play with them. They evidenced melting.
The Lithium Ion battery pack swelled and cracked down the middle. This battery pack came with the Yaesu FT-70DR handheld transceiver when it was purchased new in April 2019. I immediately stopped using the device for fear the battery may leak or blowup. Since the battery pack rests in the palm of your hand during operation, burns or physical damage to my hand was a major concern. The retailer, Ham Radio Outlet, could not help me since the battery was out of the one year warranty. They referred me to Yaesu, no response.
On April 29, 20011 my son was playing with one of his Phineas and Ferb Walkie Talkies. After playing with the toy he must have left it on and placed it on our leather sofa. Approximately 4 hours later we returned home and my husband went to move the walkie talkie so that he could sit on the sofa, when he did this he noticed a gooey melted substance on one side of the walkie talkie. He then called me over to look at what had happened and we both noticed a 4-inch melted and burned area to our leather sofa. The melt/burn caused the sofa to rip and actually show the stuffing on the inside of the sofa. The shape and size of the burn was the exact shape, width, and length of the walkie talkie. The walkie talkie itself felt warm to the touch and had little to no battery power left. We immediately cleaned the substance off of the walkie talkie and then took both walkie talkies away from our son. We then reached out to Toys R Us, where we purchased the walkie talkies, as well as Digital Blue, the company that produces the walkie takies. Toys R Us has followed up and informed us that the case is being reviewed and will be taken very seriously due to the burn that was a result of the product. Digital Blue has not been accommodating or helpful in trying to rectify the situation and will only communicate about this matter through E-mail, no phone number or contact person has been given after numerous attempts acquire one. Digital Blue has also requested several times that we send them the walkie talkies back so that a "new and tested set" can be sent back to us. The company does not take this matter seriously nor are they concerned about the safety and well being of their consumers!
(04/08/2015) The consumer placed batteries in the walkie talkies. As soon as she placed the batteries in the unit, they became too hot to touch. The consumer took the batteries out and the product cooled off. The batteries were brand new [REDACTED] 9 volt alkaline batteries. The consumer tried a different brand of batteries and the same thing happened.
Pieps or Black Diamond labeled avalanche product switch fails to stay in set transmit position. https://www.pieps.com/dsp/. This is a known issue to the MFG and they are claiming to address this with a new case. But it doesn't address the faulty locking switch. Hello, I think the news announcement today from Black Diamond and Pieps is a whitewash of the issue. https://www.pieps.com/dsp/ Snow sports people have bought these beacons and the switch cracks and fails. It has nothing to do with the case. But yet their recall plan that all are hailing across the internet is for a new hard case. "Consumer confidence in our products is paramount, which is why the PIEPS R&D Team has now developed a new hardcase carrying system for all DSP transceivers, to replace the neoprene carrying system supplied with the DSP transceivers. The design of the new hardcase carrying system provides extra safety to ensure the transceivers are locked in the send position when in use, and remain securely in the send position during use." The switch on my beacon broke, likely from downward forces during switching. And now that it's broken it moves super freely. I doubt it broke from being in the soft case. I don't understand how a hard case prevents this beacon switch from failing. And it won't hold it in position. I live in Abq and have two of this model, one is broken, one still working. Since the magazine is in SF someone can come look at mine and evaluate for themselves. I'm hoping someone call's out Black Diamond/Pieps on the marginality of this voluntary recall. The first and every subsequent times we have turned on our Creative Designs International Disney Pixar Cars 2 Mater and Finn McMissile shaped walkie talkies, we can spell burning and it gets very hot to the touch. All we do is hit the switch to turn it on and it starts burning. It is battery operated. It is a horrible burning plastic smell.
My 4 year old and I were playing with his walkie talkies mater and Finn Mc missle disney pixar and I just put fresh batteries in not even five minutes after we began playing Finn Mc missle started smoking in my hands and smelling like fire and Burt wires and I shut them both off.
The grandson opened the walkie talkie (blue) Christmas Eve. The batteries were in the product for approximately 2 hours. When the child got home, the walkie talkie was hot to the touch. The plastic wrap that was wrapped around the battery had split open and the entire walkie talkie was hot to the touch. The parent took the product from the child, removed the batteries and placed everything outside. There were no injuries. There were no know issues with the pink one. The walkie talkie use 3-AAA batteries in each one. Two walkie talkies were in each package.
