The wiring inside the electric grill smoker melted, shorted, and the insulation caught fire.
I have owned a George Forman Grilling Machine for a little over a year. I like it a lot, until this morning when I woke to a house full of smoke, I thought the house was on fire. I like, many don't unplug these Grills Model GRP4EWS. the lights stay on but not the heat, well there were no lights on and it was turning the plates red. I noticed when turning it over to get this info it looks like the grease has somehow leaked into the bottom part, not sure how this could happen. This maybe the problum.
Hamilton Beach breakfast sandwich maker Purchased at Wal-Mart on January 22, 2016 Model: 25475W Series: A4151DX On September 18, 2016, the wire-coil-protected cord on the Hamilton Beach breakfast sandwich maker sparks and emits a burnt odor. This is our second unit. The first one started on fire about a month after the warranty period (purchased the first one in 2015; it died January 2016). This second appliance I purchased at Wal-Mart on January 22,2016. I have the receipt. Yes, I bought the breakfast sandwich maker again, even though the first had flamed out on my kitchen countertop. I thought, "What are the chances the breakfast sandwich maker would self-immolate a second time?" Turns out: pretty good. I contacted Hamilton Beach about the issue and they sent me a mailing label to send back Sparky. And they've sent me a new appliance. Right. I have a third breakfast sandwich maker. I know, I know. But what are the chances?
Caller stated that the pellet grill spontaneously comes on by itself and this has occurred twice. He stated that he has unplugged the unit. Caller stated that he contacted the retailer and they transferred him the local store. Caller is concerned for the safety of this grill emanating CO into his home whenever it rains and he places it in his garage. The manufacturer was not contacted. Caller feels that this pellet grill is a fire and health hazard and should be reported.
My Masterbuilt slow smoker stopped working. I found that it had tripped the gfci breaker on the outlet feeding it. When I tested the power cord to the smoker with a multimeter, I found the the live and neutral power terminals were shorted to ground. I opened the smoker and saw melted wires. The internal wires to the electrical heating element have high temperature insulation, but the wires on the electrical cord powering the smoker do not. The insulation had melted and the wires were shorted together and to the housing. I contacted Masterbuilt customer service twice and only received one response stating the the smoke temperature emanating from the smoker is less than 105°C. They did not address the real problem that the power cable is held against the heating element with zip ties, causing the insulation to fail. Their power cord insulation is the incorrect type for this high temperature application and poses a shock hazard to the user once melted through. NEC table 400.4 states that thermoset insulation should be used for heater elements which this insulation is definitely not. It seems to be thermoplastic from the way it melts. Additionally, the use of this cable violates NEC article 310.15(A)(3) that states that the insulated conductor's temperature rating may not be exceeded.
This is an electric BBQ powered by an electric 110 volt wall outlet. The on/Off switch is not in any way prevented from turning on by the usual Push In (indent) method used for example in an electric range. The knob moves freely from its off position to any one of 5 power numbers simply by turning the knob. The plastic weather cover which is made by Char-Broil for this unit upon placing it over the BBQ invariably will turn the unit on. A red light behind the knob indicating that the unit is on is thus concealed. The BBQ will ignite the cover and thus create a fire. We have the unit placed on a porch on the second floor of a condominium. If we had not noticed this problem and thus avoided it by always unplugging the unit after use I'm confident we would have experienced a serious fire.
My Masterbuilt Electric Smoker started on its own for some unknown amount of time while it was covered and powered off. Once it was noticed overheating, removed cover, unplugged unit, and noted seals melted, plastic warped, electronics non-functioning, decorative cover scorched. Unplugged unit to turn off. After letting unit cool down, plugged back in, observed unit again in runaway temp mode, display and controls were non functioning. Attempted to reach Masterbuilt customer service and filled out on-line report including pictures. They appear not interested in investigating their product and attempting to understand if this a serious issue.
