(09/15/2012) The consumer stated that he was going to make a bar- b-que smoker. The consumer stated that he put the blade on a grinder. He let it run for a minute. As the consumer was going to make his punch cut on the smoker, the blade exploded into about nine pieces. The consumer stated that a piece of the blade flew and hit his left arm about five inches below his wrist. The consumer grabbed his elbow because it was squirting blood. The consumer stated that he squeeze the artery to stop the blood. The consumer stated that he walked to the house and yelled for his wife. He stated that she called 911. The consumer stated that the ambulance came and took him to Bloomington IU in Bloomington, IN. The consumer stated that he was seen by [REDACTED] in ER. [REDACTED] cleaned the wound and stitched it up. The consumer stated that he was sent to x-ray to make sure that there was no foreign debris in the cut. The consumer was advised that his ulnar nerve, artery and tendons were cut. The consumer stated that he developed a blood clot. The consumer stated that he had to go back to the emergency room. The consumer stated that he was seen again by [REDACTED]. [REDACTED] ordered an ultrasound on his arm. The consumer stated that the doctor advised him to follow-up with a vascular surgeon. The consumer is still under the doctors care. (09/17/2012) The consumer contacted the manufacturer. The consumer spoke with [REDACTED]. The consumer was advised to send them the disc. The consumer sent the disc to them. The disc was returned to the consumer after it was inspected. The consumer was advised that they would not do a destructive test. (12/11/2012) The consumer stated that the last email the he received from [REDACTED] advised him that they did not find a product defect. The consumer stated that they asked for his permission to do a destructive test. The consumer stated that he denied the request. The consumer stated that [REDACTED] Tool Company
WEN 94475 7.5-Amp 4-1/2-Inch Angle Grinder. Purchased from Amazon April 25th. Did not use the grinder untill June 27th after 2 minutes the grinder went on fire, blue,smoke and flames. Pulled cord from electrical outlet and grinder was very hot. Reported to Amazon they would do nothing due to out of return date. Wrote to WEN they would not reply. Wrote to BBB ,to date no response. Numerous instances in Amazon reviews i regard to fires and blue smoke but Amazon refused to deal with the product when I contacted them.
On March 8th, 2011, I went to cut a section of steel chain link fence pipe at my home. I was using a Cal-hawk metal cutoff wheel on a Milwaukee 4 1/2 inch angle grinder (Model 6148). My complaint is that the Calhawk cut-off wheel came apart while in use on a high speed grinder. I was not injured. I installed the Cal-hawk cut off wheel on the angle grinder. Specifically, a 4-1/2" CAL-HAWK CZCW4510 metal cut-off wheel. I started to make my cut into the bare fence pipe. I made about half of the cut when I noticed the wheel becoming wobbly. I set the tool down and waited. I unplugged it and then inspected the wheel. In short, the wheel's cutoff material seperated from the metal ring it was attached to. I have pictures which I hope to upload. The wheel is marked as being good until 14,000 rpm. The maximum my angle grinder can turn is 10,000 rpm. I'd be willing to mail you at my expense the wheel and component if you'd care to take a look.
The meta;l safety guard on my Harbor Freight 4 1/2 " grinder sheared off and my face was injured by a combination of the separated guard , and fragmented grinding disc . It is impossible to know if the separated guard caused the grinding disc to shatter or the disc fragmenred first and the guard sheared off in the event , but in either scenerio , the guard should not separate from the tool and become part of the violently exploding metal fragments .The clamp( that was originally a part of the ONE piece metal guard) remained in place on the grinder Some of the impact to my face knocked my safety glasses off , destroyed and knocked off my Harbor Freight LED headlamp , and I suffered a "goose egg" and a cut over my right eye . It required a trip to the ER but required no stitches ... I was lucky . Most disturbing is this is the SECOND TIME a guard on this Harbor Freight model has sheared and injured me ! The first time it happened , the impact knocked off my safety glasses and the impact to my left eye caused a " black eye" . Harbor Freight switched out the first defective grinder and sent it back to headquarters for defect issues , but apparently , it is still an inferior guard that creates additional hazard .
The consumer used the drill for approximately 5 minutes, when he dropped the angle grinder. The angle grinder hit his right leg, below the knee (just above the ankle), while it continued to operate. The consumer sustained several lacerations to his leg. His wife rushed him to the ER, which was only minutes away. Layers of his skin were removed by the angle grinder, so sutures could not be applied. His wound was cleaned, bandages were applied to his leg and pain reliever was administered. The consumer was released the same day. The consumer sent dealer and email about the incident. He was passed around to a few different rep's before finally corresponding with [REDACTED], (Claims Specialist Supv.). 8/3/2020: [REDACTED] sent the consumer an email and inquired how he was doing. She asked for additional details. [REDACTED], called the consumer, requested the angle grinder and gave him instructions as to how to file a claim. She also asked the consumer to send an email indicating what he was looking for in terms of compensation. The consumer sent the angle grinder and several extra grinding discs and the wire wheel that was being used with the angle grinder at the time of the incident. The consumer has been waiting to see how the firm will handle the matter and what type of compensation they may offer him, but the firm has not provided further details in the last few months.
Century grinding wheel 41/2" diameter, 1/16" thickness and 7/8" arbor, rated to 13,200rpm. 120lbs of air pressure, grinding is rated at 13.4 so never came near where it states wheel is rated. Safety was on at the time of incidents. Caller's husband has used these wheels for over 20 years but these most recently purchased, shattered into several parts while in use with pieces flying off in all directions. The first time this happened was Friday, November 16th, 2012 or Saturday, November 17th, 2012 when a piece flew between caller's husband and friend but was dismissed as this being one wheel that may have a defect. Another incident happened with a different grinding wheel shattering during use Friday, November 23rd, 2012 but this time the pieces cut a groove in the palm of his hand from close to the wrist and ending under the smallest "pinkie" finger. Caller drove her husband to the Jewish Hospital Emergency Room after finally convincing him that he needed to go for treatment. Doctor [REDACTED] with the emergency room diagnosed his laceration, placed two stitches inside, four outside and prescribed antibiotic to prevent infection. Callers have not contacted the manufacturer, they did contact the retailer who told them that they would contact the manufacturer. Callers have been unable to find all the pieces but have saved the one's that they have found. They have one that has not been used and one that has been used and shattered.
I was injured by a product that had inadequate warnings. I purchased a wood cutting disc for my angle grinder from Amazon. On the webpage on Amazon (where I purchased it) and on the box, there was no warning about extreme kickback. When I went to use the product as advertised, it caused my angle grinder to kickback, flying out of my hands despite my firm grip, slicing my arm badly enough that I almost needed a tourniquet, and later at the hospital, 7 stitches. I'm concerned about the potential this product has to severely injure (or even kill) someone else due to lack of warnings on the webpage and the box that it came in.
the product that failed is Freud-Diablo Flap DISC Integrated HUB The first incident I was using a [REDACTED] grinder rotation speed 1100 RPM. As soon as I started the grinder, the abrasive flap disk came apart form the red plastic and struck me in the thumb going through my leather glove and cutting my knuckle on my pointer finger down to the bone. The second incident exact same as the first but this time the material hit my in the stomach. Please see attached photo. In both incidents, the blade was not touching any metal as it broke apart right as the grinder started
