I purchased a kitchen a mandolin slicer yesterday at Costco in Dedham Massachusetts. Last night was the first time I used it. I believe this to be a terrible product which comes with very poor & vague instructions and safety warnings. First of all, the first time I tried to slice a tomato, the plastic blade cover broke off. The part that is supposed to hold the tomato was virtually impossible to use. The fresh and firm tomato came out like tomato sauce rather than sliced perfectly as per the instructions in the skimpy 4 page manual as well as verbiage on the box. The second time I tried to use the product, after attempting to re-install the "Blade safety" cover I tried slicing an onion. Again the plastic safety blade shield broke off and the food holder slider did not hold the onion in place. The third time I attempted to use it to slice a cucumber, the blade safety cover was broken and the food holder slide was not able to hold the cucumber in place even thought I first cut it in half to provide a more flat surface. As the product was not working as advertised I attempted to slice the cucumber without the food holder or the blade safety cover. After several slices my pointer finger got sliced off about 3/4 of an inch and was bleeding profusely. After my family assisted with first aid, I went to the Newton Wellesley Hospital the next morning at which time they termed the would as an avulsion and there was no way to stitch the wound. As a result of the lack of working safety devices and inadequate instructions, I now will have a permanent disfigurement on my right pointer finger.
My husband was cutting fruit. We have a KitchenAid Classic Fruit Slicer that cores and cuts fruit into slices. He was cutting a piece of fruit, the slicer was set on top of the fruit and you are to press down with your hands on the side grips. When he did that mid way through the blades broke free of their outer plastic housing and the back of the blade sliced through my husbands hand. He needed 4 stitches at the Emergency Room for a laceration just over an inch wide and a quarter inch deep.
I was using the mueller onion chopper pro for probably the 4th or 5th time. The design is that you put the blades into place and then use a locking mechanism to lock them before using it to chop food. I was locking the blades into place when the locking mechanism broke, causing my hand to go forward into the blades slicing my finger in the process, which warranted an urgent care visit and 3 stitches.
The consumer stated that her husband received an inch long cut on his thumb from the slicer as he took it out of the box. The consumer's husband applied at home first aid. The slicer was only wrapped in a clear, plastic bag. The consumer contacted the manf on 9/30/14 regarding the incident. The consumer stated that the representative listened and took down the model # and purchase store information. The consumer was not asked for her name or any other contact information. The consumer was not provided further information. The rep stated that he would talk to his boss. They did not ask to have the product shipped back for inspection. The consumer stated that when she spoke to the manf, they informed her that the product should have been in a neutral position, so it should not have been able to cause any injury. However, the consumer stated that when her husband took it out of the box, the blade was raised. The consumer stated that there are no warnings on the outside of the packaging asking to take proper care when opening the package. The consumer stated that the labeling is on the insert, located on the inside of the packaging. The consumer also contacted the retailer, but they did not know what to do about such an incident.
I was using my apple corer/slicer to cut through Granny Smith apples in preparation for baking. I was using the usual firm pressure necessary to move the slicer through an apple, but on this occasion the blades separated from the frame and remained wedged high in the apple. The outside of the slicer, which I was still holding onto, passed rapidly by the now-free blades, slicing deeply into the pads of both my thumbs.
Purchased a SUPMAKIN MANDOLINE FOOD SLICER from amazon on aug. 3 2024. Have used it about 2 months, while cleaning found chipped teeth in the main body. There is the possibility of small plastic pieces getting into the food. I have pictures of chipped teeth.
Severe laceration down the length of my fifth finger into extensor tendon that required surgery. Laceration occurred while using the Spiral Vegetable Slicer made by Paderno/World Cuisine which has NO GUARD WHATSOEVER to protect user from multiple exposed blades. User manual does not provide adequate warning other than advising that the blades are sharp. Vegetables like zucchini are fixed in a horizontal orientation onto the machine with plastic spikes that rotate the vegetable as the consumer rotates one end with a hand crank. The opposite end of the vegetable fits up against a series of triangular blades protruding toward the oncoming vegetable and another blade that works like a mandolin slicer. The device turns a zucchini into spaghetti as a hand crank is turned at one end pushing the zucchini into the array of blades. When I began turning the crank the zucchini slipped out of position and I reached to steady the zucchini and the device at the end close to the blades and probably miscalculated; the dorsal side of my fifth finger was sliced open on the triangular blades below the profile of the zucchini. My doctor advised me the machine is VERY dangerous!!!!! So many people are buying this same device and I am worried someone will loose a finger. These blades could easily be protected by a simple guard without interfering with the function of the device.
I purchased the Veggetti pasta maker. I used it to slice up 1 cucumber, a squash and a zucchini. My sister found a small mental piece that looked like it came from the inside of the Veggetti in her cucumber slices. Sure enough their was a missing piece. Took it back for a refund
