44 year old consumer and his 14 year old son climbed a Primal Vantage two person ladder stand and upon reaching the seat the metal near the middle of the ladder folded causing the ladder to collapse and causing the consumer and his son to fall to the ground. The consumer suffered serious injuries. Consumer weighed approximately 160 pounds, his son weighed approximately 100 pounds.
While removing a two man ladder tree stand from a tree the ladder stabilizer bar slipped allowing the ladder to bend causing a fall, which ended in a broken foot. There were three of us moving the stand. Two on the ground and one unfastening the straps at the top. The ladder stabilizer bar is a two piece square tube bar to stiffen the ladder. Unlike other brands that use tractor pins, Hunter's View uses a set screw with a plastic handle. We were moving the ladder stand in the morning and overnight there was a heavy dew. The set screw slipped (slid) causing a jerk inward in the middle of the ladder. This caused the top to bend out away from the tree. All factory instructions for set and removal were followed. Recommend that the set screw be replaced with a tractor pin to avoid further falls and injuries. The stand itself is solid.
I ordered a Predator Platform from Tethrd last year. Upon delivery (approximately in September of 2018), I promptly went to set it up on the tree and it broke when camming it over to lock it onto the tree. I reached out to the company, and they sent a new one. However, within the same week multiple other hunters had broken the platform in the same manner, prompting Tethrd to release a "gen 2" platform that was reinforced in the area where they were breaking. They DID NOT recall the original predator platforms, but discontinued manufacturing them and replaced originals with the gen 2 design if consumers requested it. They maintained that there was nothing wrong with the original design, but that they wanted to "beef up" the gen 2 to make it "bulletprood." Tethrd and their representatives repeatedly claimed that the platform was safe to use if used in accordance with their instructions. Yesterday evening, a consumer posted a picture of his original platform broken in the same manner as mine and others. Several other individuals had also broken the platform over the past year, and were unaware that there were two versions of the platform. Tethrd representatives continued to assert that the platforms did not need to be recalled. I believe that a tree platform that can potentially break 20ft in the air is dangerous, and consumers should be aware of the dangers. I would like the manufacturer to recall the product, and publish the recall information on their web page and social media sites. There are obviously hunters still using them, and breaking them during use.
Hello, I am writing in regards to an API Crusader Treestand that I purchased from Bass Pro Shops in 2012. On December 2, 2017, the tree stand failed while in use (specifically while i was climbing up the tree and attaching my safety line to the tree). It buckled at the foot platform and lost grip to the tree, causing myself and the tree stand to free fall down to the base of the tree. I have several pictures and witnesses to the event. I filed a report with Bass Pro, but it has come to my attention that they may not have recorded this event with CPSC. There are two obvious failure points on the tree stand (as opposed to user error), and I believe the public should be made aware of this to prevent a future serious injury. The Sniper STLS41 "The Scout" model tree stand consists of a ladder connecting to a platform raised some 18 feet in the air. The ladder collapsed under his weight as he was climbing the ladder for the first time during the installation process, despite the stand being rated for 500 lbs. capacity for user(s) and gear. He was caused to fall, resulting in a severe leg and ankle injury. Metallurgical testing has shown that the stand was not manufactured in compliance with WW Industrial Corp.'s carbon steel tubing specifications. In fact, the metal alloy contains no detectable level of carbon and is also deficient in manganese composition, these two elements playing the most important roles in strengthening steel. The manufacturing batch at issue is 7W-1 013. A second incident involving the collapse of another STLS41 from this same manufacturing batch has been reported to the company. There were 730 units manufactured in this batch, whereas there have been over 30,000 sold in total. Accordingly, out of 30,000-plus units sold, the only two reported collapses came from the same batch of 730. There is clearly a manufacturing defect in this batch.
I represent an injured consumer who fractured several vertebra when he fell almost 20' from a tree stand on October 11, 2013 in [REDACTED]. The tree stand was secured to the tree by Regal brand 1"x15' ratchet tie-downs imported from China by Service Tool Co, LLC, of New Iberia, Louisiana. While these straps have a purported load of 1000#, the stitching in one of the straps failed when the consumer stepped on the tree stand. The combined weight of the consumer and tree stand was approximately 240#. Subsequent tensile testing of exemplar straps failed in the stitching at 344# and 116#. It should be noted that the packaging did not even specify a maximum load, although it warned not to exceed 1/3 of the maximum load. The consumer suffered severe back injuries and will likely have to undergo multiple-level fusion surgery in his back.
On Mar 26th 2016 myself and my friend [REDACTED] were moving my Big Game Treestand, Guardian XL model ladder stand, to a better ridgetop location on my property in Bedford, VA 24523. [REDACTED] went up to unhook the ratchet strap to the stand like we have both done on multiple occasions over the last 20+ years. The stand had been in place since late Aug 14 (purchased new) when I put the stand up with another friend for my son to take his first hunt out of on VA youth day 2014. When the ratchet strap broke free for [REDACTED] I felt the stand move (I was holding the ladder section below) and I saw my friend falling head first along the tree!! Thank the Lord he rolled at the last second and landed flat on his back instead of his head. It was a miracle that he was not injured more than he was and he is alive today without permanent injuries. We want to inform as many as we can about what caused this accident. It wasn't because [REDACTED]loss his balance and fell or because he stepped off the stand's platform. It wasn't because he was careless or not watching what he was doing and fell. No, he was not wearing a safety harness at the time because the last thing we both would have thought was that the stand's structural integrity would have failed the way it did.A safety harness would have not prevented what occurred with this tree stand, When the ratchet strap broke free the whole upper platform bent inward and to the left towards the tree that it was attached to. [REDACTED] was kneeling on the foot platform leaning to the left as that was the side that the ratchet strap buckle was located. When this occurred it caused him to go upside down as he went with the platform and then he fell head first out of the stand. It all happened in a split second!!! This stand is supposed to be rated for 500 pounds I believe. The stand's structural integrity or the strength of it's metal failed for reasons unknown. One of the steps on a Rhino climbing stick (RTSL-24, hot foot climbing stick) broke at the weld joint, which caused the user to fall a short distance and suffer torso abrasion. There are 3 intended weld joints attaching the step to the stem, however 2 joints showed no weld penetration which led to the failure. The weld joint failure occurred while the climbing stick was being first installed. Fortunately the user was utilizing a linesman belt. Injury occurred from the user falling due to the step failure and subsequently contacting the steel climbing stick. Feradyne is the parent company for Rhino stands.
