I purchased the Smartpoint USB/Wall Outlet Extender with Nightlight (model SS-Q905) at Bj's in early September. When I plugged it in , I saw that a powerstrip I had connected to it was showing a faulty ground. I tested the powertap with an [REDACTED] tester and it shows that the polarity was reversed, I tested the outlet itself and it was wired properly (see attached photos). I emailed the manufacturer and they acknowledge the issue, calling it an isolated incident: Help Smartpointco via [REDACTED] Sep 8, 2022, 1:58 PM to me [REDACTED], We did speak with the manufacturer. They are investigating. But this was fully tested with reputable labs, so I suspect it may be an isolated incident. Nevertheless, we are taking this very seriously and are further researching. This was 3 weeks ago and I have not heard anything else. I went to the store and exchanged the unit, and the replacement does the same thing. No injuries or equipment damage occured.
I think 3 yrs ago I bought a "Super Switch" manufactured by King Sound Ent. Co. Ltd. at Costco, Yonkers, NY. This morning I woke up by a severe burnt smell and I found out that it came from the Super Switch that I bought from you. The unit was begun to melt and covered with smoke residue it's better that our electrical switch tripped off - stopping the fire to happened. This product endangered my baby and needs to be redesigned before other children are seriously injured or worse. The product claims to protect babies from electrical outlets. Well, even a cursory review of the hinge design reveals that it is intentionally designed to have a breakaway hinge for easier product packaging. This hinge makes it trivial for my 18-month-old to simply tug on the cover from the built-in cord hole, and the entire assembly pops off. We have 5 of these and our baby thinks its funny to pull the FULLY LOCKED cover off. A product safety recall should happen
Gardner Bender Grounding clips, GGC-1508, UPC 032076015084, used for ground connection in residential house wiring, which I purchased several days ago from Ace Hardware in Racine Wisconsin, are extremely brittle. 3 out of four broke as I attempted to install them. They broke as if made from ceramic. I suspect either a bad heat treat process or hydrogen embrittlement. If they are compromised by hydrogen embrittlement, then I believe there is a possibility that some clips will install feeling normal but will completely fracture later potentially compromising the ground
I was attempting to put a new plug on a lamp cord. I purchased a current product, LEVITON's Flat Vinyl Plug No. 48643 (package of 2, white, 2-prong, rated 15A-125V, also marked 1B22Y0, CPC 7847784648), UL listed Plug 257B. This plug is designed with two ramped tabs on opposite sides of the core piece that are designed to slide into and then lock into slots in the flexible shell, retaining the core in the shell. The connections are screwed posts on the core piece. The core pieces are supplied already inside the shells so that you have to disassemble the pair before the plug can be used. The instructions state "Pry body out of cover." and there is a drawing of a flat-blade screwdriver being used for this. Because there are two opposed tabs, and prying on one side tends to re-close the already pried other side, you either have to use two prying tools or repeatedly pry alternating sides while trying to pull the core out of the shell, which is awkward. I had to repeatedly reorient my hands and the screwdriver. During this process, I impaled my hand with the screwdriver, drew blood, and damaged the first couple of layers of skin. Supplying these preassembled is not necessary and adds the disassembly step and adds the risk of injury.
We installed "Outlet Plug Covers (32 Pack) Clear Child Proof Electrical Protector Safety Caps - Jool Baby" as part of baby-proofing our home for our nine-month-old's safety. Within seconds, my nine-month-old was able to pull out the installed outlet protector. This created a severe dual hazard of 1) unprotected outlet, and 2) choking risk.
Maxxima 1875 Watt 7 Button Countdown Timer Switch product #MEW-PT1800. Multiple users, including myself, have found that this product randomly goes to the "on" state while unattended, providing power the attached load. This switch is commonly used in bathrooms to control infrared heating lamps. If the homeowner is away, the infrared lamps will stay on for hours or days, potentially leading to a fire. If connected to a motorized device, the motorized device will start without warning, potentially leading to injury.
The product, a 1-gang, 'Old Work' junction box, intended for the installation of an electrical outlet or switch in a finished home, was purchased at Lowe's for its intended purpose. The box comes with molded sprintabs, intended to retain an inserted wire. They are sharp in the corners and along the edge, thereby introducing a high-probability of damage to the wire. Twice, the tabs cut the brand new Romex insulation. If the cuts would have been unnoticed, they could have caused an electrical short and spark, potentially leading to a house fire.
