My electric space heater made a loud noise similar to a welder arc zapping. I then saw a bright glow of orange through the air vent on the top side. This is separate from the heating elements. It was on fire on the inside! Thank God it was in my garage! I unplugged it, picked it up, while the orange glow continued, and carried it away from everything. I inspected it and it died down to a small little flame that I was able to blow out from the air vent.
A Pelonis oil filled space heater overheated where the plug in wire went into the unit. It over heated flames and smoke happened. The fire department was called and a fire extinguisher was used to extinguish the fire. It was being used by Nurses in a hospital. The heater was being used as a space heater for warming purposes. No injuries were noted, however the product did smoke up the Emergency Department of the Hospital.
2013: The heater can toppled over very easily. The slightest movement, makes it easy to fall over. The 2 front wheels are approximately 1-1/2 inches inward from the edge. The heater has fallen over and the handle is broken and the part where the cord is wrapped around it, also broke. This only happens when the heater is moved. The consumer will not contact the manufacturer, because of the length of time she has it. There have not been any injuries. The heater has multiple settings (low, medium & hi), and it still works.
A Vornado space heater was operating in an upstairs guest bedroom when I heard a loud buzzing sound lasting about 510 seconds. Shortly afterward, the smoke alarm went off. Upon checking the house, I discovered the guest bedroom was smoky, and the wall around the electrical outlet was charred. The heater had been running unattended for about 15 minutes after my guest left the room. It was plugged directly into the wall outlet, not into a power strip or extension cord. There were no physical injuries, but there was property damage. The heaters cord was melted at the prongs, the wall outlet and outlet cover were partially melted and burned, and the wall surface around the outlet was blackened. I was able to wipe away some of the charring, but not all. When I found the unit, the plug had already come loose from the outlet, as if forced out during the event. I immediately turned off the circuit breaker to the room and aired it out. Later, once the smoke cleared, I began repairs. Testing confirmed the electrical line voltage was normal, and a new outlet functions properly under normal power load.

I have a HC-2017 ceramic portable heater we purchased at Lowes a few years ago. We dont use it that much because we live in Peoria, AZ where is not that cold. I took it to our trailer this year in the mountains on a trip. It worked for a couple of days then it would not work anymore. I took it home and took it apart and was shocked at what I saw. Inside the main power coming into the unit was all burnt and the connector was corroded and broken. I fixed this and was going to still use the unit. I did some research online and someone said to take off the bottom cover and check it. Man am I glad I did. The main power cable is burnt and shorting out. If we would have continued to use it, it would have eventually caught fire. I am shocked there is no recall for this unit.
My Delonghi DRAGON space heater started sparking and I saw a red glow in the front of the heater so I turned it off and unplugged it. It smelled like an electrical fire after that. I purchased the heater last fall from Home Depot.
Purchase a ceramic heater #HC840 / HCE840C series put it in operation and proceeded to heat small bath room. I was overcome by a oder that smelled of cement dust. I think that the ceramic is burning. Heater is a Honeywell brand called. Ceramic Genius . Thank you [REDACTED]
