The danger score on this ranking combines four factors derived directly from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) probability sample maintained by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Each product category is scored against (1) the absolute volume of estimated annual emergency-room visits, (2) the share of those visits that resulted in hospitalization rather than treat-and-release, (3) the demographic reach of the product across age and sex strata, and (4) the multi-year direction of the trend line. Two products with the same raw injury count can have very different scores when one disproportionately hospitalizes older adults or has been climbing steadily for five years while the other has been flat or declining.
NEISS aggregates patient records from a stratified probability sample of about 100 U.S. hospital emergency departments selected to be representative of the roughly 5,000 hospitals with emergency facilities nationwide. Estimates are extrapolated to a national total using sampling weights that account for hospital size and geographic region. Confidence intervals on individual product estimates are typically within plus or minus 10-15 percent of the point estimate, so small numerical differences between adjacent ranks are within the noise band. How Danger Scores Are Calculated
Each product category receives a danger score from 1 to 100 based on four factors from CPSC NEISS emergency room surveillance data (2005-2024):

- 2. Hospitalization Rate - Percentage of ER visits resulting in hospitalization. Indicates injury severity.
- 3. Fatality Rate - Percentage of incidents involving death. Weighted heavily in the score.
- 4. 5-Year Trend - Whether injuries are increasing or decreasing. Worsening trends add to the score.
These four components are combined into a single composite score. Products scoring 60+ are classified as "Critical" risk, 40-59 as "High" risk, 20-39 as "Moderate" risk, and below 20 as "Low" risk.

To keep this comparison statistically meaningful, we only rank categories averaging at least 100 ER-treated injuries a year; smaller categories can show large percentage swings from a handful of additional cases, which would be misleading here.
