I have a very serious safety issue with my Singer sewing machine. I have been sewing over 50 years so I have plenty of sewing experience. In May of 2022 I purchased a new Singer Model #HD6800C serial number 131711071953. The problem is that the machine runs even when I am nowhere near it. It takes off very fast and the only way to stop it is to unplug it. It has happened about 5 times in the past and it happened again today. I called Singer customer service some weeks ago and since the machine is no longer under warrantee, I was simply told to unplug the foot petal and use the hand feature on the machine to sew. I was also told that I am not the first person to report this issue. I was too busy at the time to argue about the response with the customer service person but when the problem happened again today- when I was out of the room, I realized that this is a much greater concern than what I first imagined. Here is the huge issue - I am at risk of getting my fingers caught in the needle when this machine takes off. I also have grandchildren that I am teaching to sew and I truly feel that this machine could seriously injure them if the machine suddenly took off when they were sewing. I know enough to quickly unplug the machine but this is such a shocking and startling event that they may stick their little hands into the needle to stop it. That thought terrifies me. Today it started zooming when I was in the other room and I had to run in to stop it. What if I was outdoors or left the machine plugged in and on and left the home. The least of the damage will be to foul the bobbin/needle mechanism and ruin the machine. The worst would be to overheat and cause a fire. I have thoroughly inspected the pressure foot petal and it is clean and free from any foreign object, dust or debris that could cause the petal to stick in an on position. I purchased a Singer 4432 sewing machine from Amazon.com and felt a continuous tingling/shocking sensation when in contact with the machine's metal base plate while it was on. Investigating further, I measured 80VAC on the base plate relative to ground. I exchanged the unit with Amazon twice and both units had similar issues, measuring 55VAC and 53VAC respectively. I've made Singer aware of this issue; however, they contend that it is a coincidence (not a systemic design defect). Further, they say that since none of their other customers have reported getting shocked, there is no issue. They have been unwilling to test one of their own units using a voltmeter. I purchased a Pro-Stitcher quilting system for my long arm quilting machine from Handi Quilter January of 2023. With this system they sold Chuwi brand tablets. These tablet batteries are overheating, causing the tablets to swell and bust open or melting the tablets. Today mine starting leaking battery acid from it. I paid $12,000 for The Pro-stitcher system and Handi Quilter says that my tablet has a two year warranty and is not covered and I would have to purchase a new tablet that's over $1,000 (I'm still making payments on the original purchase). They know that people are having problems with these batteries and if it's over two years they won't make it right. No one should have to be afraid that a tablet may cause their come to burn down. Handi Quilter says it's not their responsibility, rather it's the 3rd party's responsibility. I didn't go into a contract with Chuwi and I wasn't given the option to buy a different brand of tablet. Handi Quilter chose to contract with Chuwi to make these tablets for their system and Handi Quilter sold these tablets to their customers. Someone needs to fix this dangerous issue and every Chuwi tablet needs recalled.
My Bernina Sewing machine caught fire today. I was mending a few items and it had only been in use for about 10 -15 min. I heard a slight pop and then smoke started coming out of inner components that aren't accessible. I have a Bernina 1005. I unplugged the machine and took it outside. I did not see flames only smoke for approximately 10 min.
In July 2015 I purchased a Juki TL 2200QVP Long Arm quilting machine with a Grace frame. The Grace frame is subject to failure. Note that the frame is intended to support a sewing machine that weighs in excess of 85 pounds and should operated on a sliding cradle system. There are two incidents: 1. The feet supporting the entire apparatus fell off. This sent the heavy machine lurching forward while it was in operation at up to 700 stitches per minute as I operated it. The sudden loss of balance and control created a very unsafe situation and the possibility of injury due to the startling and significant weight shift. The Grace firm later sent new feet, secured by a bolt, to replace the defective parts. Curiously, I visited a store just last week that had on display a new Juki like mine with the same frame. The defective, old style feet were still being used. 2. The plastic sleeve used to support the top bar on which the quilt backing is rolled is insecure and falls away from the frame at random times. When I called Grace about the first issue, they asked me if there had been occasions of the top rail falling away from the frame. At that time I had experienced no such problem. That is no longer the case. Again, it is unsafe to experience frame failure while operating a heavy, powerful industrial sewing machine. The possibility of injury is apparent. It disconcerts me that the Grace firm in Utah would continue to sell a product with defects that are know to them with disregard for consumer safety.
January 30, 2014, I purchased a new Juki TL 2010Q. This new machine model comes with, not one, but 2 automatic thread cutters. One thread cutter can be engaged by pushing a button on the sewing machine which is great. However, the 2nd thread cutter is the problem. This 2nd thread cutter switch is in the foot control (the foot pedal that is depressed to do the sewing). When the heel (bottom) of the foot controller is pressed, the thread cutter is engaged. This is a dangerous feature. It is too easy to engage this foot controller accidentally by touching the foot controller when you are not sewing; for instance, moving or turning your fabric. As long as your machine is in the "on" position, the thread cutter is active. While we sew we may need to remove some thread from throat of machine. There are many reasons our fingers could be near the needle while the machine IS operating. We sew, we stop, adjust, we sew some more, etc. Yes, we need to be cautious and keep our fingers away from needle while the machine is operating. However, this automatic thread cutter in foot controller can be engaged while the machine IS NOT operating, those breaks in between, while we are adjusting our fabric as happened to me when I began to sew and was moving a thread out of the way. The thread was not where it was suppose to be . My foot (which was resting on the floor) somehow engaged the foot controller and the thread cutter was engaged. Needle came down, caught and punctured the edge of my pinkie finger. The needle has to go down into the hole that goes to bobbin in order for the thread to be cut. The needle puncture my pinkie finger and actually took off a tiny bit of my finger. Of course my finger bled and was sensitive for weeks. I have sewn professionally using industrial sewing machines. My 12-year old son received a pea-sized 2nd degree burn (blister) on the index finger of his right hand from the sewing machine's light bulb when trying to thread the needle on the sewing machine. The bulb is bare and has no protective covering to protect users from the heat of the bulb. I am surprised that I did not receive a very similar burn myself just because of the design. My son has received previous instruction on how to safely operate the sewing machine - both at school and at my home. I was standing next to him when it happened. It has been a week since the incident and his finger is still healing. My ask is that Husqvarna/Viking redesign the bulb to create a clear, cool protective covering over the bulb to protect users for new machines; and create something for that can be retrofitted for those who already have the machine.
I own sewing/embroidery machine, Husquavarna Viking Topaz 30. While embroidering a towel my machine started to stitch too fast and then it turned off and I saw smoke coming off the machine. At that point, I unplugged the machine and brought it to the dealer next day so it could be serviced by their technician. I do not know if the machine is fixable.
