A Pyrex baking casserole dish that we have had for about 10 years exploded in the oven. I had loaded it with chicken that was cooked and was warm. Also room temperature tortillas and cheese from the refrigerator. The dish was at room temperature-I did not take it out of a cold environment into the oven or do anything else that the manufacturer warns against. As you can see from the picture not much is left of it, even if it may have had a product number. It did say clearly Pyrex on it.
We had an Anchor glass loaf pan shatter in the dishwasher, even though it was listed and marked as dishwasher safe. The pan had been sitting on the counter until we consumed all the bread loaf we had made, which also meant there shouldn't have been any known sudden thermal changes (except by the dishwasher cycle). Injuries could have occurred when cleaning up the shattered glass or if shattered glass had gotten in to other "clean" dishware.
I was Browning ground beef in a Wolfgang Puck Stainless Steel Skillet on Low-Med Heat. I heard a "pop" and saw that the lid cracked over the ground beef causing glass to fall into the ground beef. I took pictures of the lid and have them if needed. This is very concerning as I paid a premium price for the whole set of Wolfgang Puck Stainless Steel cookware as well as for the Ground Beef. Please let me know if you would like the pictures.
Today I was cooking game hens in the oven. I had placed them in a glass pyrex pan. They were baking for about 45 minutes, when I opened the oven to add some basting sauce (consisting of white wine, olive oil, and garlic). I was putting in a small amount (no more than 1/4 cup) of this liquid that was at room temperature directly on the game hens. I slid out the oven door with the bakepan on it before adding the liquid. The glass bakeware exploded violently, as soon as I started basting my hens. I mean violently. Glass shards flew several yards -- all around the kitchen. Luckily no one was hurt. (In fact, it is a miracle.)
Baked chicken at 400 degrees for one hour in a rectangular Anchor hocking baking dish. Removed from oven, placed on counter. Removed chicken to serving platter. Within 5 minutes the pan exploded. Glass went everywhere. Luckily no one was hurt.
I was baking a ban of brownies and when they were fully cooked I removed them from the over and placed them on top of the stove. While they were cooling I was playing on the floor with my daughter, when I smelled something hot. I stood up just in time for the glass brownie pan to explode! The whole pan blew up and glass sharts that were very sharp went flying all over my kitchen at least 15 feet. My daughter was not injured by the explosion but the sound was so loud that it scared her and she started to crawl away...right through the glass shards on the floor. My own feet were cut in a number of places when i ran after her and carried her out of the glass. It took several hours to clean up all of the tiny pieces of glass that were left lying after the explosion.
EXPLODING PYREX!!! okaaay, so we were eating dinner, lasagna baked in a 9 by 13 glass pan made of pyrex. We had the dish out of the oven for at least an hour and it was cool, and it just exploded into a million pieces all over the table! WHAT THE HECK!! Glass and lasagna all over...we had to throw dinner out and scrub the kitchen. We threw away the bread and butter and had to dump the drinks. The thing just exploded! I am not exaggerating. We had little glass silvers in our hands and we feel like it is in our hair. We had our glasses on so no eye injury. The thing had cooled a bit and was sitting quite peacefully on my table. So much for the pyrex hype! It is very dangerous. A little internet research revealed this was happening to a lot of people, over the last 10 years or so. Beware! My pan was brand new.
September 6, 2016 Consumer Affairs Department Anchor Hocking 519 Pierce Avenue Lancaster, Ohio 43130 Shattered Glass Baking Dish - Injuries, Damage Dear Consumer Affairs Department: On September 5th, 2016, I was using one of your glass baking dishes and it shattered spontaneously in my hands upon removing it from the oven. As I had heard of glass baking dishes shattering if placed on a stone counter from the oven, I did not set the dish on the counter top and I did not bump it in any way. Due to the glass shattering, I received a burn and cut on my arm and a cut on my leg. Thank goodness I was wearing glasses and it was not one of my children who removed the dish! In addition to suffering injury from the dish shattering, the shooting glass caused the following damage: Hot glass melted into my rug. Glass shards scratched my wood flooring. I lost a full dinner, which was contaminated with glass and had to be replaced with a dinner out. The dish was destroyed. I have others that I will not use and must replace. Attached are photos of the damage. Please contact me to discuss a resolution and what is being done by Anchor Hocking to make consumers aware of the possibility for your baking dishes to shatter. I see on your website that new products come with safety warnings, but that action does not educate consumers who already own your products. I would expect that Anchor Hocking would have in place a full consumer education campaign that includes public service ads and consumer segments on television.
