Plastic housing on Homelite Blower Vac UT42120 broke while vacuuming yard debris and finger was cut slightly
I was starting up my DR Power Walk Behind Lawn Vacuum Pro-SP. The flywheel has 5 leaf shredder blades welded to the flywheel. I was not even using the machine at the time, only starting it up. One of the blades came loose, came through the plastic cover on top of the machine, almost severed my left thumb, then impacted my chest. Damage to the thumb was extensive. The second joint was separated, at least one tendon was severed and reattached, one ligament was still attached to a severed piece of bone and re attached, one nerve was severed, there were several bone fragments, The second joint is current pinned while the bones heal. The impact to the chest resulted in two cracks in the sternum, internal bleeding behind the sternum, and a bruised lung. I spent two days in two different trauma centers. While the leaf shredder blade was the only piece to exit the machine and hit me, the flywheel, which is still inside the vacuum chamber, is almost torn in half across the middle. Without further examination, it appears to be a result of bad welds between the shredder blades and the flywheel.
Caller stated that the blower vacuum has a failure, while using it approximately 30 seconds, her spouse held in it his hand and it began taking in his garment, then the plastic crate at the bottom of the unit broke which caused it to take in even more of the garment. He then noticed that the electrical cord started to melt. It was unplugged to prevent further damages. She had a prior incident with the blower but her spouse thought she had used it incorrectly. She feels that this blower is a safety hazard and should be recalled. The manufacturer or retailer was not contacted as yet. The product is not part of a recall.
The plastic side discharge chute on a Troy Bilt lawn vacuum/chipper/shredder is split/broken where it was moulded. Debris was shot out toward the operator. While the vacuum was purchased in October 2021, this Fall (2023) was the first season it was used.
While using the rake/vac plugged up that the extension cord for approximately 5 minutes there was a spark/flame that shot up from the units chord causing the consumer to power the unit in the off position and unplugging it from the extension cord. The casing of the chord has melted on one of the prongs. One side of the extension cord melted too. She contacted the firm on 11/1/2011 via email and reported the incident to the firm and the response that she received was that the failure could have possibly been caused by the extension cord. The consume was also advised that she should be using a UL listed cord and that she probably extended to far which caused the arching and flames. The firm asked that the unit be mailed back into them so that they can attempt to duplicate the failure. The consumer has declined in sending the unit back into the firm. The consumer estimates that her husband has used the rake/vac a total of six times and it has always been used with caution and the same extension cord.
I was using a Black & Decker LH4500 Leaf Hog to vacuum leaves when a heard a loud "bang" and was knocked to the ground by an impact on my right leg. When I was able to get up I discovered that the cast aluminum impeller in the unit had come apart. The largest fragment was embedded in the units housing while a smaller fragment (about 2" X 2 1/2") had gone through the housing and hit me in the leg. I was wearing very heavy work pants but still experienced broken skin in a "check mark" shape on the right leg about 4" above the knee. The area around the point of impact (about the size of my hand) started to swell and bruise. Now (5 days later) some swelling persists, the bruising has become deeper, and I still experience some discomfort with every step. I was very fortunate to have been hit in the leg and be wearing heaving pants. Had this fragment hit me in the face, neck, ankle, or knee, it could resulted in a significant injury or even death. I have been in contact with Black and Decker and am providing the unit for engineering analysis. As a former engineer I consider the unit unsafe (refusing B&D's offer to provide a replacement) because of the relatively brittle properties of cast aluminum, its use in a corrosive environment under cyclic loads (with the potential for fatigue failure), and a plastic case that is obviously incapable for containing such a failure.
I was using a Toro Ultra 225 to suck up dry leaves when it caught fire.
