How is the injury rate calculated?
The injury rate is based on CPSC NEISS (National Electronic Injury Surveillance System) data. NEISS collects injury reports from a nationally representative sample of hospital emergency departments and uses statistical weights to estimate national injury counts.
What does the preventability score mean?
The preventability score (10-95) estimates how preventable injuries from a product category are. Higher scores mean injuries are more likely avoidable through safety measures, proper use, or supervision. It factors in hospitalization rate, fatality rate, and whether injury trends are improving.
How are risk levels determined?
Risk levels (Low, Moderate, High, Very High) are computed from a composite danger score (1-100) that weighs annual injury volume, hospitalization rate, fatality rate, severity index, and 5-year trend direction.
Can I filter results by age group?
Yes. Select an optional age group to see what share of injuries for that product category affect that demographic. Age groups follow NEISS categories: 0-4, 5-14, 15-24, 25-34, 35-44, 45-54, 55-64, 65-74, and 75+.
What is the data source?
All data comes from the CPSC National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS), covering 2005-2024. NEISS tracks product-related injuries treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments. Consumer reports come from SaferProducts.gov.
